is tipping a must

Okay so I heard that people in the USA, ok, great those were my reactions when I heard about tipping but yesterday I was in the restaurant for the first time( in the us that is) and the waiter kept asking if I needed anything when I clearly am helping myself and don't need anything. Was she trying to get a good tip? I noticed some people leaving money on tables as tipping but idont really have that good of a paying job enough to tip anyone so the question is did u fault when I left without tipping? I only make 1800 a month and 1000 of it goes to rent already

After living in Canada for a long time, I just get used to the idea that paying tips is a necessity, unless if the service is exceptionally crappy. I usually pay approximately 9~13%
in Canada, at least where I live, the acceptable amount to tip is 10% of the total on your bill. these waitresses or servers are getting a low wage as it is, probably saving up for college. if that was your kid, wouldn't you want people to do the same to them?
No, if they are foreign people then they shouldn't tip
Okay reading all comments I understood that it's a nice thing to do but not needed and those who said it's a must they just want to help people with weak salary or probably even then selves but someone living in a foreign country and off 1800 a month shouldn't worry nor feel obligated to do the same as foreign people customs and cultures
$1800/mo is totally liveable. maybe you should find a cheaper apartment, a room mate, or make more money. duh. or just don't go out to eat if you can't afford to tip! the wage for waitresses here is under $3/hr and, although most of you hate the concept, they're dependent on tips.

Yeah some waiters just keep asking too much. I think the new ones do that.

Actually, places that serve food don't make as much money as other kinds of industries. Expecting the same pay from a restaurant job that require at least five people in the kitchen, hostess, bus boy and minimum a server vs. a store(like 7-11) that only needs a clerk is not fair. This usually affects local restaurants, mostly. Running a business is really stressful, the way I see my boss. She runs around worrying about over or under stocking for the week. Year end financial, tax matters, pay checks and all the responsibility crap are no joke. And I believe that the owner is the one getting under paid. Imagine if the workers all wanted a bigger piece of the cake. The baker would have none left. The place would close down and there would be more unemployed people wandering the streets.

Honestly, if people don't want to tip just take it to-go or just order fast food. Getting waited and served is a luxury and the person providing it should be rewarded. If you can't afford to tip a server, then take it home and fix your place for yourself or your guests. That way you aren't viewed as a jerk and you get to save that extra dollar or two.

Just tip a dollar or two. Tips are really dumb, and the workers should just be paid more

Tips could be split between other staff members (cooks & stuff), so it would be less rewarding for 1 actively trying waiter/waitress required to split his/her tips to the apathetic staff. It's mostly required job behavior here

I hate the idea of paying waiters/waitresses with tips. Tipping should be something extra you get if you've done a good job, not the majority of your pay.

every minute my pepsi glass is empty you get -1% tip starting from 20

Sorry, but that's the way it is right now. If you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to eat at a place with waitstaff.

well most servers don't make enough money and giving them a tip is always a way to show appreciation...
as well as not being a total jerk. that last statement wasn't a judgment call on my part, it's just the culture. to be honest, i don't know why but, I know it's not like this in Asia and other places (it's starting to change now, though, but slowly).

But it's part of the culture and you're expected to tip. The fact of the matter is, however, that tips do end up being a part of their pay just because without it, they wouldn't get by. just give them a little extra However, it's like one of the comments above said: if you can't tip, just don't go out to eat. Most food at restaurants with servers isn't the cheapest thing anyway. My advice is to stick to McDonalds for food on the go. Otherwise goto Jewel Osco for foodstuff :] It's always fun to make your own. I mean, I can't really make food so I stick to boxed rice, ramen, and a whole loaf of French bread. It's actually pretty yummy on its own. Then again I am a simple guy lol

I've always been taught to tip when I eat out at a restaurant. Even when the service was sub-par, I'd still tip the waiter or waitress. It's just common courtesy and good etiquette where I live.

The only scenario where I wouldn't tip would be if the waiter/waitress did something incredibly awful like blatantly throw water at my face or something.

College kids are cheap. Certain types of jobs have a minimum base income but rely on tips to really make anything.

Only if they deserve it. I think tips shouldn't be a part of their pay. Tips should be for the great service offer.

If the server does a good job, makes me or my friends happy with jokes, and re-fills my drink without asking then I usually leave a tip. Some places however, like you mentioned the waitress or whoever kept asking if I needed anything and I would say "no, thank you". I would only tip if they did a good job.

It's generally accepted that you tip someone in the US. If you don't, you're probably actually a terrible person (unless the service was exceptionally awful). If you can't, don't go out to eat then.
Most people that work jobs with tips live off their tips since their wages are probably really low- even below minimum wage.
Also if more than half your money goes to your rent, I have no idea how you manage to live...

^ Like above said it isn't necessary. The job description of these people are to make us feel welcome and serve us. I only tip if the waiter/waitress goes the extra mile and does the extra things for us not just "Hello what would you like" and bring us food and expect tipping.

i only really tip if i like the waiter/waitress who served me, its not absolutely necessary, its just respectful
