Google Chromebook Question

So my old laptop is beginning to act up. I was going to opt for buying a new laptop but almost all retailers want to sell me Win 8, which is rather incompatible with Maplestory.

Rather than be hassled by all this I went on a hunt to find a Win 7 laptop only to find out they were more expensive than Win 8 laptops.

So then i'm faced with 2 choices.

I can pay a mild payment of only $250 for a chrome-book and give it a try since it's layout LOOKS like Win7..

Or i can attempt to buy a Win8 Professional Edition to downgrade to Win 7 Prof.

The latter will end up costing more money, and of course time.

So my question is this. Has anyone used the Chrome book before?
Is it just a laptop version of a tablet or can Maplestory be installed into it?

Thanks in advance.
the thing is, windows 8 is literally windows 7 + tablet interface. there are lots of mods out there to get rid of the tablet interface if you don't want to use it.
Windows 8 is a lot more than that under the hood.

@squire7766: Not really, just press the windows key and you're back to your familiar environment

@greenelf:

I don't know, i just don't like the feel of windows 8 lol

It feels like im using a tablet. From what i've seen, it's a rather large pain in the butt to navigate.

Maybe i'll give it another shot though.

Thanks a lot for the help though

@squire7766: Most full fledged computers will come with Win8 Pro. Windows RT is basically the same thing, without the desktop. And I'd stick with Windows 8, it's so much faster than Windows 7
Hmm thanks for the help.

I've never had much luck with Ubuntu, so perhaps i'll just wait for a Win 8 compatible MS. Otherwise i could get Win8 pro and then downgrade to Win 7 pro.

The problem is that online stores as well as Best buy and whatnot don't always mention which version of Win8 they're using. It's frustrating
Ubuntu is great. 12.04 is rock solid, 12.10 was a little shakey though. 13.04 is shaping up to be a great release though.

There's also a lot of other distros such as Fedora, Arch, OpenSuse, Debian, etc.
Chromebooks are pretty awful, except for the fact that there are no viruses and it boots quickly.
I'd recommend buying Windows 8. In my experience, it boots faster and logs in faster than Ubuntu. However, if you'd like to go by the free route, install Ubuntu. Then, you can install ChromeOS on it.
Note that Maplestory will never work on Ubuntu or ChromeOS.
MapleStory will become compatible with Windows 8 in the next few patches.
Hmm thanks.

@iCrisis: So i can just run Linux on the Chromebook and work it as a regular Linux then?

If so, i might just opt for that.

If all you need is a web browser, look at the new Samsung Series 5 Chromebook for $250. If you need Windows, you'll be looking at a new notebook.

You could also install Linux on the Chromebook since it runs on ARM processors.
