Starforce enhancing question

I may be wrong, but a long time ago I heard someone say that if you starforce your weapon/equip before you perfect it you lose out on some stats? Because starforce gives more attack after a certain attack threshold. (For example after you get 300+ atk on a weapon starforce gives +6 attack per level). Is this true? I am thinking of gaining more attack by starforcing my +6 weapon to 10 stars then finish off the last 4 lost slots in the future.
