Basil Artist Battle

Just curious, would anyone be interested in an Art Battle here? Basically an art tournament where Basilers go against each other, with each round being a different category of what to draw. Then a thread is posted for each round, with the loser getting knocked out and the winner progressing onto the next round and etc, until there's a winner. :o Any takers?

Sounds kinda stupid, seeing as I'm making the thread and all, but not sure if I'd take part or not... I'd feel horribly intimidated. :x But in another way, it'll kick me up the ass to actually draw, especially in areas that I don't usually draw in.

So yeah, post if you're interested. Also feel free to contribute ideas, thoughts, flaws, etc.

[header]NEED IDEAS FOR CATEGORIES PLEASE! D:[/header]
Random ones off the top of my head:
Maple Story skills
Future vehicles/transportation
Animal hybrids
MURDER IN CANDY LAND?
Woodland scenery
Masculine males
Logos
Building perspective
Your Maple Story character drawn in the style of cubism
Recreation of a fine art piece with a modern twist
Action scene
Fantasy
Food

Please throw suggestions and insults on how naff my ideas are. :x
Haha I don't mind, we should get a head count of people signing up first, yeah. I'd like to start off with a general category for the first round. I was hoping we could discuss it.
Do you use AIM btw? o.o I find IMing easier
Although actually I like using IRC, but I'd need a java[?] link since I uninstalled mirc. T___T
Do you have MSN? :x Although we could just use a free chatroom and talk there if that makes things easier.

Gonna close this now to create the sign-up sheet. Time to ping all these users. *Procrastinating on revision*
Yeah I'm gonna judge. Isn't it like us and that other guy? Was gonna open a message board or something to discuss each round or something. Last time I just used the BasilIRC but think only like 2 out of 5 judges appeared at the same time, lol.

btw wanna open up the sign-up sheet either today or tomorrow. Think the rules and stuff'll be alright?
Lol this sounds fun. can't wait til the compitition fires up! I can't join, cuz of time, but hope other ppl have fun w/ this! Good luck guys.

How about for a category, a complete rotation of a character (like 3 drawings of a character's front view, profile, and a back)? Or make an inanimate object walk (comic form?)? Eh?
Can I be a judge instead of a competitor?

I just tried some of these categories... and I'm terrible at drawing now. o.o
Didn't you say you were going out of town in a couple of weeks? It's probably not a good idea if you're not gonna be around.

@Boullion: Sweet! That makes 3 judges in total now.

Gonna be opening up the sign-up sheet soon, think the only thing I really need to establish are the categories.

You should have a cartoonism and realism category.
Yeah, I was gonna say what the judges are marking on and what the voters should keep in mind when we announced the category since each category would have different points. Maybe you'd want to be a judge?
And an average score to round up the winners. Plus you have more than one judge? :
I...
don't like competitions. Count me out for this one because I'm too much of a wimp. Or maybe because there's too many good artists on Basil...
I'm not so fond of the idea of art being simply rated as "better" or "worse," either.

Personally, I would like something like this better:
-People are divided into small groups
-Each group is prompted to draw something different - like, "mountain scenery" or something
-The group members share their depictions of the art prompt. Discussion/rating ensues.
-The rating system has CATEGORIES. Like..."creativity - 8, very creative," "colors - 5, could use a little more color," "cuteness - 2, although this isn't a major factor," "anatomical accuracy - 9, them muscles," etc. so it's not just "His is better, yours is worse."
-Or, we just list the things we like / critique on the art.
-Based on the art that gets the most positive aspects/points and the least negative aspects/critique, a winner is decided.

I'll watch from the sidelines, though. GO TEAM!

well, what does a judge have to judge neways? lul.
Well I think the winners are gonna be determined by both public voting and judges, haven't quite got the balance sorted out yet.

@SpiralStaircase: Hopefully this week! I'm gonna be moving this week so I might be pretty busy, but hopefully it will be soon enough. Gonna do an official sign-up sheet soon as well.

Well it looks interesting! I guess I'll join xD

I think a week should be sufficient time. It gives the slackers time to slack and gives the patient ones enough time to come up with a nice composition.

Kk, so rule time. D: Please contribute criticize etc etc

- The first rule of Basil Battle is that you talk about it to everyone, so more people know about it :o
- 4 people per battle? Then 2 go through to the next round?
- No tracing. References must be posted? (Does this matter that much?)
- If it happens to be Maple Story related, do not submit it to the screens until the round has finished.
- No asking for votes - This will lead to immediate disqualification.
- Each round will take a week. (Too long? Too short?) If you do not post your entry, then you will be automatically knocked out.

BTW WE STILL NEED MORE JUDGES PEOPLE

@twinklefish: How should we set the battles up? Randomly? o_o; And should we have 2 different tournaments for traditional art?

Reply August 6, 2011 - edited

ooh hm..well more like aahh I suck at math but basically each judge gives each contestant a score out of like..10 and then we would add up the total judge points and then take public vote into account via some type of point system?

WAIT SOMEONE WITH MORE COHERENT MATH SENSIBILITY RE-WORD THIS? LOLL.

And man you guys, we can't have literature, poetry, drawing, and design in one tournament. I support variety but..lol too much of a stretch. >_>

@CrinklyPanda: Even if it were to start soon, if you progressed through a lot of rounds you might not be around for the later rounds. I don't think this'll be happening anytime soon, not until everything is completely ironed out anyway. And with logos, that's more graphic design than actual drawing... So not sure. :x I'll put it up anyway to see if there's any interest!

@twinklefish: This is definitely getting complicated now. Your way definitely seems the fairest way to do it though.. So would the 50% of the judges votes be like the judges voting out of 10, or like each judge gets to cast a vote which'll count more than the public vote?

@jimmyjxia: Nah, not everything'll be Maple Story themed. I mean, I haven't played MS in like 3 years I'd barely know what's what, haha.

I mean... I don't think that this art competition should have any restrictions on how we express ourselves. Limiting everything to a Maple-based theme doesn't seem to appealing but I can understand if that is the case considering Basilmarket is a maple site >.<

I guess I'll count myself in this competition. Just let me see how organization gets unfolded first.

We could do like..a point system where public vote = 10 points judge vote = 10 points or something
OR UM..LIKE BASICALLY PUBLIC OPINION IS WORTH 1/2 AND JUDGE PANEL OPINION IS WORTH OTHER 1/2?
but your idea works too haha

@RKyais : gurl wu u talkin' about. I'd participate for the sub..but I'm also too lazy HAHAHA.

@RKyais: I can give out free web hosting for a prize as well. Maaaaybeeee a custom website layout if I feel extremely generous, but it'll seriously be very half-assed, so not sure if anyone would want it. :x

@twinklefish: When I done a colouring competition years and years ago, I think what I did was have a panel of judges to choose the final 4, then the public voted? Not sure if that's right seeing as I don't think we had a poll then, but that's how it went ideally.

@DrHye: Sweet This'll makes things a lot easier.

Reply August 3, 2011 - edited

You could incorporate public and judge voting system. It's nice to include the community in some way.
...Lol wow we are making this so complicated.
@BassChan: Woodland scenery? Masculine males? (I'd fail at this as well, lol.) Poverty? I'm sure we can think of some. :x
Only masculine males would be tough for that, and you can probably accentuate the masculinity of a male character by surrounding him with cute girls, haha. *Hates bishonen males*
The voting is what would bug me on that, judging is probably better since we also have many talented and unbiased members here. *Shrug*

This sounds like a tournament ladder sorta thing. I'm no artist, but if I understand this right, you could use this site:

http://challonge.com/tournament/bracket_generator

It makes tournament ladders for free, you just put in the names of the competitors, info of the tournament, all that stuff. I used it for an omok tourney
Perhaps you could also have a few ~collaboration~ rounds for those that are a little shy or unconfident about their drawing skills.
:3 Of course that brings up the problem with how to group people together; maybe by randomization or having people choose their own partners? Idk.

I'll consider joining once things become more concrete. This sure sounds interesting though! :>
We should all draw ourselves, and then someone will cut and paste it onto a bigger picture, so it'll be a big collaboration
hopefully no one simply does a sketch and hands it in as a complete piece, a total mockery towards others who spent time going past that stage...

I'll probably donate if this does actually happen:

First place: if you have a d-A - 3 Month premium membership
Runner up : if you have a d-A 1 month premium membership

might end up just being 1 month each depending on my -points well -
Wow! Really? That's very generous of you! If you were willing to contribute, I'd try and chip in as well in some way or another... Nothing related to money though, very very broke right now.

Soooo... Saying if this does go ahead, anyone else want to be on the judging panel? Not gonna choose randomly, just wanna see a show of hands or something.

@suama: There's always a way to get cuteness out of a category. I know that's what gets the majority vote, then again... it's not like a poorly drawn "cute" submission would beat out a well-drawn "serious" image.
I think public voting system could go horribly wrong. >_>
That's what I was thinking. :X

@SpiralStaircase: On Gaia Online we do something kind of like that called Avatar Battle Royale. Basically role playing fights between the avatars using comics. Some people decide to make their fights more story-oriented, even going on adventures. All sorts of skill levels participate too, from people who can barely draw stick figures to people who have actually been published in graphic novels.

I currently have three level 24s and working on the fourth, and I've farmed 1.7k gold. It's definitely not boring, I can farm for 8 hours and not be bored.

Then again, I can also grind in MapleStory for 12 hours and only be a little bored, so I guess maplestory helped my patience!

I would join but I'm too addicted to Dragon Nest at the moment.

What would be REALLY fun is if you made it literally a battle! People must draw characters in action doing active or defensive MapleStory skills, and whichever seems more epic and "strong" would win the battle!
