Honestly, none of the anime SMT-related does the game justice. game, yes. I have yet to play the Persona series myself but SMT:Strange Journey and Devil Survivor = omg <3 Hoping to pick up SMT4 at some point.
The games are eh, coming from a neutral standpoint. The pros are: 1. JRPG with a very intricate story 2. Some of the games may or may not take place in the same universe (trying to limit spoilers, but Persona 3 and Persona 4 are in the same universe, and some others might be) 3. It's a Shin Megami Tensei game, and those are usually always good.
The cons: 1. It's a JRPG, so you have to constantly train because of the game's steep difficulty curve. 2. The story gets confusing at times. 3. The play style may not match up to others within the series (different features may or may not be added within each game).
Overall it's a wonderful series (I have a buddy who LOVES JRPGs) but I find it somewhat discouraging to play (not a fan of some JRPGs).
Persona 3 FES is a really great game. Its kind of dark and depressing though. Persona 4 is a little more upbeat compared to 3, so if you don't want your heart torn out and your emotions jerked around play that first.

Unless you're playing on a harder difficulty, or want to fight Elizabeth/Margaret, no you don't.

The games are amazing. I absolutely loved Persona 3. There's an anime series for P4 and a movie that recently came out for P3.
