Dying your hair

Soo im wondering if anyone here on basil has dyed their hair to like...lets say aqua blue? Any drastic colour like that anyways. My hair is black and i wanna know if theres any other way to get that light hue without bleaching in advance. Also, what brand would u recommend?

I've never dyed my hair, to be honest.
.. I think i'd look silly with anything lighter than my dark brown color.

Dyed hair that's not a natural color looks so damn trashy every time. It just looks bad.
Now, when a blonde dyes her hair dark brown, that is HOT STUFF. Other than that, dyed hair usually sucks.

I've gone from jet black hair to brown to light brown, different hues of red without bleaching but trying to do drastic colors definitely involves using bleach to lift the color from your hair so that you can add that vibrant blue you want to it. I've bleached my hair from jet black to a golden blonde. http://i.imgur.com/jVHGXMC.jpg

@fraddddBS: Because hopefully guys won't be shallow like that. <.< unless they have a fetish for it.
I talked to my Fiance about it and he doesn't seem to mind at all.
It's not really a major thing I don't think anyway so why make a big deal out of it
@necrocandy: Bwaaaaaaa twice a week? No way in hell I can't stand the feeling if I didn't wash my hair for 2 days... I'll try to see how it turns out though @.@
@zoneflare2: quit lying. show me pics of you with green hair nao plx.

@Nashi: I had gotten my hair stained by some bad pink dye, then with a blue.

When my hair is untreated and natural it bleaches just fine with one go for darker colors (I just did mine fire engine red with very little lightening) to 2 bleaches for my baby pink hair. My hair is dark brown and it seems to lift pretty well.

For shampoo, I usually just get color guard shampoo, and leave the dye in the conditioner. Usually I put the conditioner in my hair for a couple minutes then rinse. Another thing is to not wash your hair too much, unless your hair gets really dingy. I usually only shampoo my hair twice a week unless I use a lot of product, and use conditioner every time.
If you don't over do the dye in the conditioner, and not leave it in too long, then it shouldn't make the color vary much.

@fraddddBS: I think dyed hair is fine unlike tattoos or piercings that last much longer.
Or botox (yay for poison under skin ; A ; no thanks!)
I don't think much of dyed hair if people ALWAYS have colorful hair. But personally I do want to try how i look with light pink hair one day
it's like painting nails.
Do you find painted nails ugly and fake too? o:

@zoneflare2: Do you know about green cause you've had green hair yourself before... dahell. yuck. No, just no. Did you want it green when your hair was long still?
You would have looked like a goblin or something probably... no no no no. So wrong

@necrocandy: 4 bleaches after another? do you have black hair and tried to become blonde? o:
I hope my first dye-adventure won't be all that expensive... and I may need them to dye it for me too since I want a pretty specific shade/mix. meep.

Friend of mine got purple hair, I guess I'll ask here where she got it done so I can see if they have the color I want. I hope I won't wreck my hair though... I couldn't live with a buzzcut @_@ I need hair long enough to be able to make myself a ponytail...
When you have dye in your shampoo do you leave it in too or do you rinse it out immediately and then apply conditioner? Don't the shades vary if you "refresh" it with dyed conditioner every few days? o.o

and thanks for the info > w<<333

@Nashi: Well after about 4 or so bleaches to rid me of the color it was just mush. I knew it would happen, I just couldn't stand the color.

Manic panic is a good alternative, it's fairly cheap and you can find it more easily. The best is special effects, pravana, or ion brilliance, but special effects I can only get online, as well as pravana.

Hair dressers don't carry them, but sometimes they carry pravana, but I've heard you can bring your own dye in.
Most people who don't want to risk ruining their hair go to the hair dresser to do the lightening, then dye the color at home.
The dyes I mentioned have nothing in them to kill your hair, so I usually let it sit on my head with a bag for as long as I can and they condition too. As long as it's a stain, like the products I said, you can also mix them to get the best shades, put them in your shampoos or conditioners to keep the color in longer etc...

Bleach your hair.
Test it on a small spot before completely bleaching your whole head.
It's good to strip your hair after bleaching to remove unwanted colors after bleaching.
Dye with the color of your choice.

@Nashi: Whenever you get into the red family of colors, washing your hair every other day with color safe shampoo is always the minimum due to the high rate of fading. I've been redying every two weeks without any hair health issues though, so it isn't any big deal. Then again, the colors I've been using don't have peroxide in them.

@Sum1outthere: she may not forget but her grammar/vocabulary may deteriorate. I've only written English for the past 5 years. I still live in Germany and talk to my family, friends and coworkers German but I mostly think in English now and I tend to think of a word I want to say in English first and I have to translate it into my original language...
Why'd she move there so young though? O:
And I'd guess that every black hair turns orange, asian or not, but I only heard about it from Manga anyway so I'm not sure. But it would be kinda odd if it would turn brown instead... orange is close enough to brown o.O so yeah.. But you'll see probably

@Nashi: replying to ur other quote: yeah she grew up in germany and she still speaks full german. i mean, she moved to dubai when she was 19 so i doubt she'll forget it. esp cuz she still talks to her sibs in german.
im not asian so hopefully when i bleach it doesnt turn orange

@necrocandy: That's scary... why buzz cut? what did the bleach job do to your hair that you had to completely get rid of it? @___@ scary as hell!
Is manic panic simply the best thing to use when you dye your hair yourself or do hairdressers use that too? I definitely don't want to dye my hair myself (let alone bleach... I guess I will need that since my hair is naturally brunette).
@aldo3d: Is your mother's dad bald? cause supposedly you get baldness from your maternal side..
@Sum1outthere: I did hear that asian black hair turns orange when bleached xD learned that from Manga ; A ; LOL. I don't think orange hair looks all that bad though. Pretty cute depending on shade and cut
@NoNsensical: Does dye really fade that quickly? There's no way in hell I'd wash my hair any less than every other day... and it would suck if the color would be gone that quickly (with my hair color I doubt it though..)

@evonexus: I won't have a child within the first year, at least not planned (though admittedly we'll probably loosen up about protection after we marry), since I really wanna make sure that we're happy together even if we sit on each other daily. And you know how there are people close to and in their 30s still on here Might as well. And maybe my memory won't fail me this time (miracle!) and I'll come here just to make a thread to tag some of the people I've known and that are interested in my story. My Fiance and I both like games, we may play more together once we live together (right now it's just really a hassle cause of diff time zones) and if we play maple it could be we'll go to basil every now and then too. (at least I may. He only comes here for skill guides and the like)
With him it's all pretty smooth and easy though the distance really does hurt us (but we remain strong~!). He's the right man for me after all... I think anyone could have a lovely and well working LDR (and relationship in general) cause it really only needs a partner that feels the same way and who really cares and is loyal. Sadly something rare nowadays.... but yeah if you do manage to find someone like that the kind of relationship barely matters - or the physical distance between you two.

@evonexus: Because I wanna put the entire thing online once I've been married with him for a while. Our relationship works absolutely perfectly fine right now and it was absolutely perfect during the 3 months (and I'm certain it will be just as great when I visit again), but even from that you can't really judge how it will be to really live with each other 24/7 for a year or two. If the first 1-2 years work out great then I can safely put it online. It's also more meaningful then Sure it's already a kinda accomplishment that we've been together for nearly 4 years already but others can manage that. The hardest part has to be done still (visa, the entire movement procedure and wedding).

@holymolyguac: It would really depend on what shade you had in the first place. I'd have to see a picture. If you dyed it to a lighter brown color that I'm thinking of, it would accept the red with no problem. I had light brown over a really hue heavy dark red before and, although I don't have any pictures, it turned out pretty nicely. The Asian black hair would most likely only show the red in the sunlight.

At the same time, red was annoying because it faded really fast and I had to get it redone every week or two, depending on how often I washed or what kind of shampoo I had available. No matter what quality red you use, it is guaranteed to fade back to a brown-ish or orange-ish color every time. I would go to a professional to get it done the first time, at the least, just so you can get the tone right in case the brown you have would mess with the color in any way. Bleach and toner are not something you mess with on your own without experience.

@Sum1outthere: I do honestly consider putting my lovestory online (successful LDR~! it may inspire people or give them hope ^.^) but for that I have yet to find a way to make a (fully) customizeable homepage (I don't wanna use something like tumblr.... I wanna pick the entire URL myself but I probably gotta pay money for that so I don't really wanna look into that as of now)
o.O oh so she grew up in Germany but did she move to where you are then? Sounds like she's not in Germany anymore xD can she speak it still?

You know how the internet loves to exaggerate and even if there's no real risk (or I'd need high doses), honestly, I'd rather not take the risk.
It's "just" 9 months anyway. I wouldn't wanna affect that little human being with any selfish or unneeded behaviour. (fortunately I never drank, took drugs or smoked so my baby will def be fine there)

I'll see about that your BasilID is rather long and I'm not too great at remembering long IDs. So far I do remember that when I marry @evonexus wants me to post my love story online. He said that a while ago idk why I even remembered that xD

and you know the ham- and cheeseburger at McDonalds? o: yeah in America those are like 60-70 cents I guess. in Germany we pay twice that. (same with fuel xD)
Big Mac/Mc Rib are also like 2-3$, in Germany it's around 5,20$...

Your going to have to bleach it to get a vibrant hue. If you don't, it will most likely wash out in one or 2 washes if it even shows up on your hair. A small warning with blue dye, it stains fried hair badly. I dyed my hair blue, and after bleach AND fading for a month it's still tealish color.

Anyway use 20 Vol bleach, and don't over use it (I had long baby pink hair for a year, one bad bleach job and now I have a buzz cut).
If you can order it online get special effects. If you can't use manic panic, just be prepared for HEAVY maintenance. Also avoid splat, it will stain your hair permanently.
You can add a bit of the dye to your conditioner to keep the color up between dyes. You can also take a dark shade of blue and dilute it with a white conditioner to get a light blue, and it saves a bit o money.

Invest in heavy conditioners, and avoid heat treatment and only bleach your roots, or at the very least wait a while before bleaching out your color. If you want to fade it out do vitamin C treatments ever few days and you might not even need to bleach out the color.

Like everyone said, you gotta bleach it if you want the color to show up. I bleached out my bangs and dye them various colors, aqua/blue being one of the ones I've done. You could always try doing a little bit of your hair first to see how you like it, then if you do like it you can do all of it.

@zoneflare: "goes go"? What kind of English slang is that...
and shut up it has nothing to do with anime if I'd dye my hair according to the animes I'd like my hair would be light blue to white. Somehow I always prefer chars with white/blue hair and red (or blue) eyes..... Also, the kinda pink I want looks SLIGHTLY natural still, not like clearly fake like blue, green or dark pink.
Just you wait, when I'm in America I'll pay you a visit at night and dye your hair red pink and green. You will look like a skunk on drugs.

I'm certain you have to bleach it. A friend of mine with brunette hair dyed hers purple and she had to get it bleached beforehand. You can't just paint your hair like you can paint nails and expect a shiny color. you need a bright base for it.

I haven't dyed my hair yet but I do want to get a light pink in the future (somewhat like my avatar, just a little more brown/yellow-ish)
