How hard is orgo?

I need to start taking organic chem in a while.

Am I gonna be screwed if I don't go back through the old stuff?
I took the two-part general chemistry courses and thought it was easy and got an A in both courses, but I took the classes like a year ago.

Is there something that's really important to know before going in orgo?

I've never seen anyone make such a big deal out of orgo, I hear it all the time.

A working knowledge of activation energy, hybridization and MO theory, acid-base theory, equilibrium, intermolecular and intramolecular forces should make you set.
I thought the class was a pain in the ass.

@SunsetDews: If you ask people whether a subject is hard or not, you'll always get a half and half take. Some will say it's easy, some will say it's hard as heck. Everyone is different. It depends on you. You should first not be intimidated by the class before you even take it. Because if you are already feeling intimidated, you've already lost half the battle. You are psychologically scared by it, hence limiting your full capacity. It's fine if you ask people for suggestions just to get a glimpse of it. But don't bet on it too seriously, because everyone is different. What one find hard, might not be for another. If you pay attention in class, take good notes, do your homework, you should be fine Determination and hard-work can take you a long way, it just depends on how serious you are about doing it. I'm not saying you should study 10hrs a week, but giving it serious 1-2hrs beats studying mindlessly for 8hrs
Remember, it's spending good quality time studying.
'orgo'. Please never say that again.
Every chemistry person or chemistry major calls organic chemistry "orgo" for short.
And if everybody thinks of "orgy" every time they hear that term, could you imagine the teachers saying "orgo" and the whole class starts laughing

All I hear about Orgo and P-Chem is that both of those classes are hell on Earth.
But just looking over some of the topics in Organic Chemistry, it looks more theory/memorization than actual calculations. It actually looks pretty rad.

I've heard a ton of people call it orgo chem, so I don't know what the other are complaining about
I've heard it's just a lot of math and memorization, but I haven't taken it
Organic isn't that hard, at least I didn't think it was hard when I took it. From general chem you should know about electronegativity, how orbital hybridization works, resonance, acidity and pKa, Lewis acids and bases, and probably things like hydrogen bonding, and other vander waals interactions like dipole-dipole and London dispersion forces. These will form the foundation for the things you'll be learning in organic chem. Organic chem is more theory based so you'll be doing alot of studying to memorize reactions and their mechanisms; you can expect to spend between 10-15 hours a week doing this if you want to get an A.
Oh awesome I still remember all of that stuff. Great, thanks.

@SunsetDews: yea, it's like a math class. But it's not like high numbers.
Difference is more silly rules, more numbers, more equations, and more names (bond structures, mixes, etc).

inb4 smart/snobby/thinkingthey'resuperior ppl saying orgo is easy

I though it was pronounced o-chem?

Anyways, my friends say that it isn't too hard if you're good with math.

Don't ever say that again, please.

Aside from names, and the names of reactions, there isn't really anything new to learn in regards to organic chemistry.
If you did regular with inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry shouldn't be too hard,
So it's just... memorization?
2-3X harder, depending on how well you are with formulas, names, and effects. In the end, it's like a math class.

Idk what you're studying for, but if it's something along the medical fields, anything less than an A in orgo is borderline already. B+ is the LEAST you can get.
If orgo gets you down...should think about making a career jump.
Nah I'm not looking into medical field...

It's like a math class? Math is my strongest subject

I'm just worried that organic will be dependent on some concept from general chem that I've probably forgotten more than anything

lolwut
What school is this?
People were saying the same thing here, but honestly, it's nothing.

Eh, rather say orgy/orgo than organic chem anyways
