@iphoneus3rs: I really don't like talking about my stats since you can't really compare if you aren't going to the same high school and it's obnoxious but
I'll tell you this:
My GPA wasn't perfect, I had quite a few b's here and there. However, for UC's and all top colleges, unweighted GPA is important, try not to get B's it's gonna jeopardize your chances
I took 14 AP tests and passed all of them, only 1 was a 3 in French AP
I did a lot of community service and held leadership positions
I was also concert master of our school orchestra (both levels) and did community outreaches through music
Did xcountry and tennis, neither was varsity though, I'm not super athletic
SAT: 2220 ACT: 34, SATII Chinese: 800 SATII Math2: 800 SATII Physics: 780
In terms of my essays, I didn't have any kind of real help with them so I think one of my stronger points was coming off as personable and genuine as opposed to disciplined and well rounded. I talked about how my extracurriculars affected my social life positively and vice versa.
It's definitely possible to live through high school with good grades, social life, and sleep, just manage your time well.
Edit: I'm in state so UC Berkeley and UCLA were ridiculously good deals, even compared to offers like a half scholarship from USC, and I'm a little bit of a sucker for prestige so I turned down full scholarships and $10-20k stipends/living offset scholarships (from National Merit Scholarship PSAT stuff) from schools like the University of Oklahoma, University of Arizona, and University of Houston.
