Doesn't have to be a successful mining animation for a cube to drop
I've found 2 cubes from bosses while leveling my zero from 100-180 on each zero I made (2)
Yeah l feel like the best way to get cubes to drop is from doing Zero bosses, and mining the Legendary mine things.
ln total on my Zero, l've gotten like 6 or 7, and l've gotten a few from mining too. Mining is probably the easiest method*, if you can even find one and successfully mine it.
I farmed cubes for a straight week, cleaning out the temple of time in windia, and all my cube drops were from failed legendary veins.
Never from mysterious legendary veins, and my mining level was only level 5. The most I found in one session was 4.

from veins/herbpatches, often, if successful.
