Dude it's 4th gen. Just grab a gyarados teach it Dragon Dance. Then play setup-sweep. It's that easy

I thought they break it down some where in the game before, but usually if you pick the grass starter you have the easiest time in the beginning of the game. Picking water one gives you a balanced experience to the end, and the fire type is usually better towards the end. My experiences using them feel about the same. I'd go with chimpchar. I also don't focus heavily on training a whole team for the first elite four battle. I focus on just the main and two others and the rest HM slaves till I beat the Elite four then I focus on a competitive team.

Basically ANYTHING works for the metagame: beating the Elite Four. Garchomp will tear through them pretty easily.
I've used both Infernape and Empoleon, pretty good results, and they're both used in competitive play. The dual typing also helps bring you through the rival battles.

Don't get Torterra because three out of five of your team already has an ice weakness.
