Is this a good laptop?

http://www.staples.com/HP-g6-1a30us-15.6-Laptop/product_928634 for the price it seems pretty good

So I was thinking of getting this laptop since I'll be starting college soon, it seems pretty good but I'm not sure about the processor. I'll probably upgrade the OS to Windows 7 Ultimate. And I guess the most extreme gaming I'd do on it would be running a ps2 emulator. Would this be good for that? The main thing I'm worried about is the processor. Give me your advice basil!

I copied and pasted the specs from Amazon
Do you think that the price with the student rebate would be better than the one that i'm looking at?
Well, I believe that the Toshiba and that HP with the Student rebate is better than the one you are looking at TBH, and I would definitely get either of them over it. If you get the one with the student rebate however, it will cost you $170 more (given that you got the rebate). IMHO, the i3-2310m will be suited for you need just fine, as you are mainly running emulator games.

If you want to spend the extra $100 over the Toshiba I picked out earlier, that's fine too. It is also a good deal. Due note that the HP with the i5 doesn't have a Numpad and it's a smaller size screen. The rater battery life of both of them is the same, and 2.5 hours longer than the one you had picked (battery life varies depending on use, btw).

You could check youtube on it's performance for the PS2 emulators if you want. I can't find one with specifically the i3-2310m right now, but you could search for "pcsx2 i3 330m" to get an idea.

Offtopic: I've seen you around here on basil for a long time and think you're doing an awesome job in all your tech threads. Thank you for being a contribution to the basil market community, you've helped me in more ways than I can list xD
No problem and thanks. ^^ Though, saying that I'm a genius is kind of a bit much. xD I'm average in comparison to other techies.
No, I often see them at over the $500 range. There is this if you get the Student rebate: http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?sduid=0&p=40711121

Though, quite honestly, my experience with rebates is that, there's a lot of times that I don't get it... Personally, I would wait for a deal without the rebates, but that's only base on mine experience (apparently, my friend's got most of his).

Hmm I guess so. You're right. Could you maybe find a laptop that is i5 for less than $500?

you want a minimum of an i5 processor and atleast 6GB of RAM. If not you'll end up getting annoyed with your computer after a short span of time and want to upgrade. Its worth waiting a little longer and just getting a nicer computer
Why would I get annoyed with it after a short period of time? Whats the difference between the functionality in the i series processors and this amd one?
As you can see I'm a total noob when it comes to these sorts of things.
Oh it looks the same except $70 more for i3.
Yeah, it has Intel latest Sandybridge processor. It not only performs better, and it also more power efficient. Also, the Intel HD Graphics 3000 that comes with it perform better than the ATI HD4250 IGP. It actually perform close to Nvidia/ATI low-end dedicated GPUs like the Nvidia Geforce 310m for example. IMHO, spending $70 more for it is quite worth it.
i cant see the price because it wont show me the page but
i'll say no because if you want to game it's best you go with NVIDIA and a better processor thats at least i3+
and HP's are known to overheat easily
The price is $330 and I'm not really planning on using it for hard core gaming, just once in a while

Ya for the price it looks pretty good, I just don't want to jump into it too fast though.

@above: It would mainly be for school, but the only games i'd run on it would probably be maplestory, sims, and a ps2 emulator and I don't even really play MS anymore so ya..
