@ShiraokaJinja na. I guess it would be interesting, but game art isn't my style. I want to go into editorial or children's books illustration.

@Piana yes because i've never dated and am not interested in sex. A lot of art students at my school are not virgins. Especially the fine arts department.

@QuackOutLoud most illustrators are freelance so yes, i plan on freelancing.

@norman897 there are observational drawing and painting courses. For those, they just tell you on what to improve and give you demos on how the instructors paint/draw. In critiques for your major, the profs critique on your final assignment. So for example, my major is illustration. Lets say i get an assignment to make an illustration for a magazine article. During critique, classmates and the prof make comments on my artwork. Whether it works with the article, if the concept is good, if it communicates and generally lending tips.

@Capricious you mean fine art? I'm not in the fine arts department so i'm not that knowledgeable in that area, but my answer is this: Its a yes and no for me. I mean, theres mixed feelings about this topic in the art world. Many people feel that those who draw/paint/sculpt technically should be recognized; however the problem with that is that anyone can learn how to do that. I guess its all about how you paint/draw. Ex: stephen appleby barr is an artist right now that paints like from the 1800s, but adds his own twist to it. (google if you want to know what i'm talking about). He's actually pretty successful because of his "style". I would stay away from hyper realism, tho. Like, its cool that you can paint something that looks like a photograph and is realistic but like; whats the point? I might as well just take a photo, which is "perfect" and cheaper. u no?
Then, there are people who don't value technical skills. I mean, you don't necessarily need to be good in order to succeed i guess? ? ? there are people who imo, are crap but are still able to sell their work, put it up for auction, or get art shows. I blame gallery curators. They take abstract aka crap art and then label it as art then show it to the public so the public are like 'o thats what is considered good art? ok i take it" like huh? ? ? ya. but honestly, if your art looks nice, chances are you might be successful. Just need a lot of exposure so people will buy your stuff. I feel like people nowadays only care if your art looks nice or cool, so i personally just focus on that rather than whether my illustrations are conceptual.

graphic design is good. You at least have people posting jobs for graphic designers online. However they often ask you to have other skills such as html or java script or being able to use autocad and other ridiculous things that art school doesn't teach you. imo if you like drawing, then keep drawing. Then once you're confident you can put your stuff in your online portfolio and see if someone will want you for your drawings lol idk.
@icxey that will be a 75 cent charge.
@LazyLazyLazy none. I don't have a portfolio nor do i post my work online cuz im a crapbag.
Would you say that you need to have good drawing skills to succeed as an art major and to find a good career?
This is pretty much what I wanted to ask. I enjoy art and sketch often, however I am nowhere near as good as other people. I'm also into digital art/graphic design, but of course I never chose to go trough with it as a career option, simply because of all the stigma that's associated with being an art student, as well as pressure from family, friends, and whatever else influences ones career choice. I regret it greatly now, but I still have a little bit of time to go back and undo that mistake... but I'm still not sure if I'd be successful if I were to go and change majors now.

What techniques do they teach you at art school?

Are you thinking of becoming a freelance illustrator, or are you taking your drawing skills to work on something else, such as illustration?

Edit: LOL l repeated myself, at the end l meant animation hahaha

To all the people saying that OP will be living in a box, think about how much art we have in the world around us. We're in an age where art is in much higher demand then it was years ago. If you don't think so, look at all the advertisements, video games, movies, and websites you see (that and much more).
I think all the people hating are hating because they're jealous that you're doing something you love, and they don't have the confidence to do what you do.

I'm a mathematics major and I'm thinking of changing to art, but I suck at drawing. Would you say that you need to have good drawing skills to succeed as an art major and to find a good career?
In the past, I have taken several ceramics classes and I am currently taking a glassblowing class. I also try to sketch stuff (in mah sketchbook) every once in a while.

@Duzz to be paid a million dollars every time i go to sleep and wake up.
@ElDorado i'm pretty sure its going to be tough at first. Its tough for all newly graduated students. However once I start getting assignments, i hope to move into an apartment with a friend and live peacefully from there. I would love to do children's books illustrations, editorial and make my own prints. That's really the life i want once i graduate.
