How to avoid Sodium

Hey basilers,

Everything I eat has a lot of sodium such as the fat fat foods and sodas. And whenever I don't have them throughout the day I kinda have this urge to go buy some. I am not fat and my face isn't breaking out or anything but I really want to break this addiction. Any suggestions?

Thank you for your input! And when I say i have sudden urge to go buy them I meant like... a cheeseburger not chips. I am glad I am not gaining any weight but it worries me now.

Basically everything contains sodium. Just some has more than others. Although I don't think sodas contain that much sodium. Sodium=Salt

Main sources of sodium in most people's diets is processed foods. Any packaged foods in supermarkets, have lots of sodium. Look for "Salt Reduced" "Low Sodium" "Reduced Salt" "Unsalted" on packages for less sodium. E.g. Unsalted Margarine., Salt Reduced Baked Beans
Or avoiding processed foods reduce a lot of sodium. Try to cook your own foods from fresh ingredients, and only add a bit of salt when cooking. Taste your food before adding salt, to determine whether you need it, and never add salt at the table. If you're worried about not enough flavour, try other sources e.g. lemon juice, herbs, spices. If fresh fruit or vegetables are hard to get in your area, frozen is usually fine too. And for tinned, again look for "salt reduced"

When you go out to eat or buy takeaway foods, you can usually ask them to not add salt or use less salt in your food.

Salt doesn't have much to do with being fat, but high salt intake+being fat means increased risk of lifestyle related diseases, e.g. hypertension. And a lot of high fat foods, do contain a lot of sodium as well, even sweet foods.

It takes quite a few weeks for your taste buds to adjust to lower salt, but once you get past that you would find you don't need to eat as much salt and it gets much easier.

Again, fight the addiction with an activity. If you start working out, you won't need to avoid sodium as much as you think you do.
When you say "I am not fat", does this mean that you have a 10% body fat rating? "Fat" to me is 18% or more.

Anyways, just stop drinking soda and stop eating chips. You have what is called an addiction. Just fight the urge.
