when should I call about my application?
first time trying to get a job, i applied to two local burger kings online. how long should i wait for them to contact me before i call them about my application? was it a bad idea to apply to two different ones at the same time?

Courtesy clerk a.k.a. bag boy. I also had a recommendation from my brother who I basically replaced, and a recommendation from the regional manager. Yet it still took that long.

2 weeks, followed by a sincere thank you

u need to call them after about a week and ask about your application, if you want a job u have to make your name known even if it annoys them, thats what my current boss told me.

I applied to a grocery store in April, my first day was September.
Don't try and contact them, IMO. If they want to employ you they should call back.
After a week, you're screwed. And no, applying to two different ones was not a bad idea. It's often better to do that than to place all your eggs in one basket.
Don't forget to check your email, since most online applications reply by email. At least, that was the case for KFC/Taco Bell/McDonalds.
