What happened to Basilmarket?

Hey guys, I haven't been here in over 5 years. Used to be super active in the non-MS chat forums. I just came by to check this place out and it seems like the population has declined sharply. I assumed based on how MapleStory kinda died that Basil would too but damn that's sad... this was a fun place back then.

I come by once in awhile to check the anime section and see if anyone I know is still here.

I miss the auction system so much, I used it alot before. Too bad Maplestory killed itself since big bang update. Now nobody plays the game anymore and basil is a nostalgia corner.

Guess were all getting old now.

Hm I've been here since May 2008. Been lurking for over a year. This was the first forum that I ever registered and I was worried at the time, hence lurking.

@fradddd: Sadly, those are common around the interwebs. Afterall, the folks* want their likes fame/infamy. And this site isn't heavily moderated anymore.

But if I wasn't inundated by different similar personality traits, or have seen possible influences for them (books, tv personalities, etc.), I might view them as special, too.

Alas, though, these are just our own perceptions.

@fradddd luciferlied and wintersflame were probably the greatest trolls to ever troll basilmarket, smiles1337 was the first openly gay dude on basil and was a pretty cool dude from what i remember, skalz was just a cool person in general i remember her giving me life advice back when i was in 8th grade, devilofroses was like skalz's girlfriend or something like that, mindstormer knew a lot of stuff and was the goto guy for tech advice, kazoo was a mod i think im not sure, lanique did cool art, sano and misacorp were like 30 year olds who ran the basil irc channel, imtwocats was popular for reasons i cant remember, freezepop and msraine were chill basil frequents, paaaz was was sort of famous on profil3 i think but i can't remember why

im missing other people but these were the most memorable for me when basil peaked in like 2007ish when i was in middle school

@fradddd: I'm not sure what you mean. Is it the troll posts here that make the difference?

@wellness idk man, I've just been here so long. It would be a waste of time to try to get used to another forum. And I don't agree that they have the same threads and stuff as this site, because every time I visit another off topic forum it's pretty much all forum games with 30k+ replies, and/or the last reply was 4 months ago.

@fradddd: The layout is pretty nice, natural, serious, and sort of childish because of the avatars (in a good way). There isn't much difference between vbulletin and a word document.

@beefly: That can be an argument for how someone could perceive it being special. They may not have success on other sites being "known," and perhaps they have people here who they consider family. But @fradddd hasn't expressed these views specifically, and I wouldn't say that it would make the site special. It is a good theory, though.

An argument that I couldn't deny is how we could get very technical and say that this site has a special name, creation, history, etc. combination and has its unique place with those minute nuances and differences. Without that -- and generally -- I would say it shares many similarities with other sites, so then I would say it isn't special, because generally those things are negligible differences imo when I'm comparing sites.

I have had paranoia that the site is somehow special, though, like it is actually some gateway for famous people to go through or something. lol

Me being serious about it is a sign I have emotions regarding it.

@wellness: The smaller the population, the closer the people are together.

It's like a small town, everyone at least knows everyone's name and what they do for a living for the most part. Compared to a large city, you can't possibly know everyone, nor will you ever be able to meet them all and remember each of them.

@fradddd has a point, it's a lot easier to be known by your peers if there's less people to know about. It's also more inclusive, compare a football team to the entire school population. It is likely the football players would know more about each other than someone who is in a less related community.

Basil is the small cheap apartment where everyone plays or once played maplestory. In the big city that is the internet.

@fradddd: Oh, so it's your personal feelings that you cannot put words to. Well, I'd be hard-pressed to understand them specifically, unless you were able to describe them. Otherwise, I'd just imagine it has something to do with attachment, different people, names, size, or even writing-style. I wouldn't know what you meant.

@wellness because I've joined other forums and the off topic sections are just not the same.

@fradddd: Natural as in not special. It will form without any emergent traits unseen in any other community. It's full of what you would see on any other forum. It's natural like how a lion hunts the elk and trees grow and pollinate.

And you'll have to be specific, because I just see chat island as a miniature social media website, and those are just like impersonal human gatherings, microcosms if you may. And most of the time people will come from these forums and just migrate their friends over to other social media outlets like Discord, Skype, Facebook, etc.

Basically, he can easily find another.

@wellness waddya mean natural? No other off-topic section in a forum comes close to Chat Island.

I've been on and off here for the past 3 or 4 years I think, haven't paid all that much attention anymore. Last I was most active the auction function was still around I think :x oof.

@lightxtc: I come back now and then exactly for that reason too, and sometimes I do find a message in my box of someone I've spoken to years ago. Though I'm sure I've missed many of them over the years...

@rwong38: shouldn't simple math work? It tells you how many days your account has existed so you could just calculate backwards, I'd think... I'm sure there's date calculators into the past for this stuff (I've used the ones that help me calculate the amount of days for a future point in time many times)

@zombieoverlord: You're around still? What are you doing! LOL! Get LINE sometime!
I guess it felt more close-knit back then cause there were always the same people around and it was always the same familiar pixels. It's possible to find a nice community outside of basil I'm sure. Oddly enough I've had more luck making some real nice buddies and friends on imgur than on here xD One of them has been quite the life changer for me

@zombieoverlord: Don't worry. It's natural to form communities such as this. And in my mind, it isn't even close knit.

It's a shame that we'll probably never find a community as close knit as this one probably ever again.

I have been around since 2007, have been on and off till maybe 2012/2013. Since then, I've made maybe 1-2 posts a year. The old community's gone. Before 2011, we had all these different entertaining personalities. Even the anime section's dead now.

EDIT: I still don't know how to check when my account was created.

I would argue that Maplestory's decline had a lot to do with it, but I wouldn't contest that the new layout of the site had nothing to do with it as well.

Simply put, a dying games means a dying community. I'm sure the reddit is still pretty popular since there are more things to do on reddit itself, but a site like this that was primarily based around Maplestory will undoubtedly have a tougher time trying to stay alive. However, there are still people around here who are active and have been active for years, and we greatly appreciate all the continued support.

That being said, if you haven't checked out bzl.co I highly suggest you do. Because it's a lot more open (not limited to just maplestory) there are a lot of different things and maybe you'll find something that you like.

doesn't it confuse you that MapleStory is still so popular in Korea they had to make a second Reboot because the first Reboot was so full the server kept crashing

On top of what has been said, this site got infested with e-celeb wanna be who kept spamming /6/ with their brainstormed "IRL" events and unfunny inside jokes

To add salt to injury, some mods also jumped on this shtick thus the spam went unpunished and anyone who voiced how stupid they were got suspended

People just got tired of this crap and left

It is not an overstatement to say LimusocoBobo and KazooTheBat were the cancer that killed /6/

Woulda been nice if Nexon didn't screw up the game, and maybe bought BasilMarket ..
Welp I guess I'll just stick to reddit...

And when the auction function was taken out, along with the introduction of that new fm site and maple's own auction function, pretty much reduced basilmarket into a chat forum outcompeted by nexon's own forum as well as the subreddit.

Which is why mrb is making a new website and trying to pull us out of here into there. https://www.bzl.co/

A bunch of people left after we were forced to log in with our emails, and even more people got angry with the new layout. Basil hasn't been the same since.
