WorkOfArts Art Advice 2

Hey guys! I love giving art advice or critique. I can only give advice and critique to the best of my knowledge and ability, though. I've never taken an art class or had any type of formal training, so things I say might be different from what you may have been taught.

If you want critique, feel free to post below or send me a PM!

[header]Art Advice #2[/header]

Do not practice anime style. Learn realistic proportions
Style is something you develop on your own. Obviously you're gonna like certain peoples' styles, and you'll want to draw like them. But before you stylize, you have to learn.
Practicing anime style will only make you possibly good at drawing anime. You will have difficulty trying to draw other styles. Anime doesn't use the same proportion. Poses will be different because most generic anime poses would never be done in realistic drawings, simply because of the absurdity behind the poses. You might get better at proportion but in the end you'll be a lot less capable than other artists.

Practicing realistic style will not only teach you how to make your drawings more accurate, but you'll be able to change the details to create your own style. You'll be able to easily learn anime, comic, caricature, and so many other styles. It doesn't take long for a professional realism artist to learn different styles.

If you practice anime only and refuse to learn realistic, you will only become decent at anime. Only decent. Maybe. You're more likely to give up. Or you might be that one in a thousand person who actually gets good at anime only. But you won't be able to do anything else.

[header]Summary version[/header]
Practice anime only = good at anime
Practice realistic = can be good at anime, comic, caricature, realistic, hyperrealistic, distorted, macabre, cartoon, and more

What's helped me more than anything is studying anatomy and structure.

I agree with everything. I would also suggest studying lighting, anatomical studies in particular. After that, experiment with rendering different textures, applying the principles you've learned studying lighting. If you can get to a decent level with those, you'll be decent artist overall. And guys, the best part of it is, once you learn these things, you literally NEVER lose it. It stays with you for life. If anything, you may even get better even if you don't practice after you've learned these principles, because if you really have learned these principles, then you'll be seeing everything around you differently.

Its more important to do what you want. You forgot to mention that people should continue drawing as much anime as they want as long as they study and learn proper anatomy on the side, and how realistic proportions are exaggerated into that style.

Dropping this here.
Art is art, that being said...everyone is entitled to their own opinions on how art should be and what is actually considered art.
This also being said, i didnt any part of your actual post, just the title. (Okay, maybe just a little....and if you're telling people to learn realistic proportions...might...might wanna check out your own art and see that maybe this is something you need a bit of work on X_X BUT, what i said would be completely irrelevant anyways because of what i stated above! moving on!)
So setting that aside, im really posting to just ask you why you might be spending your time trying to adjust how other people's art should look to your own liking when this might not be what they want themselves?
If you got anything from what I said before it doesnt matter if I could draw my pictures with the people's head twice as big as their entire body! Because in the end, it is art to me and it is also art to whoever else considers it art! (Plus you are kinda posting this in a game where the art is of what i just described, last time i checked my pixel's head should be dragged behind me on the floor if it was actually that big...)
The controversy these days always focuses on what everyone's opinion of art is. Art is art, there can be good art and there can be bad art. I think you know exactly what bad art looks like. Don't try to lie about it or hide behind the "everything is art" arguments... There is such thing as bad art and many people draw bad art. I am simply giving suggestions on how to draw better art. This is advice everyone should take to improve at art. It's only opinion, but it sure as hell works. I know, I was an anime artist too.. I'm just saying, you can draw anime art if you want... but if you want to get good, learn realistic, or you won't really get better. At least, not as fast, anyway.

Of course, your opinion on my art is entirely your opinion. I know I'm not perfect and I know I'm not the best. But I don't think it's fair that you're using old drawings to compare my art. If you want to judge any of my art, don't look at basil's submissions (which are years old), look at something new. http://imgur.com/UX0H1D0 here is something that's current. It's not perfect either and it doesn't have perfect proportions but I sure as hell hope you use this to judge my art instead of whatever I drew before.

Besides, I don't have to be a master at art to give advice. I know what I need to work on. That's the difference between me and many other artists. I'm mediocre at best, but I know what I need to do to get better. I research anatomy and proportion, poses, perspectives, when I have the time. I learn on my own, and i have no direction from anyone else. You better bet your ass that I'm trying to make my art better. But what does that mean? Does that mean I'm not allowed to give free and very helpful advice FOR FREE until I become a perfected art master, good enough to earn a PhD or masters degree by just turning in a portfolio? Of course not! I can give advice as long as I know what works.

@menisponster shes not saying that "anime" or bad proportioned drawings aren't art this advice is critical to every artist(beginners especially they make this mistake alot) in terms of improving. I knew a girl who drew from only anime and she didn't improve at all for 2 years. she refused to draw realisticdrawings because she was "used" to drawing anime. this is an art advice and a very important one at that. I get what your trying to say but I think u misunderstoof and took this advice with a little bit of hostility, the op is only trying to help other artists get better
