So how is this game now?
Last I played seriously was whenever Mercedes came out.
How is this game? Worth getting back into? Is it still pay-to-win like crazy, or is there a little bit of a balance now? Do people get by without buying boatloads of NX? Granted, I can afford a lot more NX than before but I'd much rather waste my money on other games.

I too came back recently. LOTS of improvements. Though it is still P2W, I'd say they gave a little bit more power to mesos. You can MAKE cubes now, you can earn maple reward points for nx, and etc.
Cubes drop from bosses.
Cubes are craftable (via Smithing).
Cubes can drop from legendary veins and ores.
Cubes, epic potential scrolls, protection scrolls, clean slate scrolls, stamps, and other goodies drop from [url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgc-oS4QRd8]Elite Bosses[/url].
Certain Bosses, Star Planet Games and Party Quests give Reward Points, which is redeemable in the Reward Shop, which is like the cash shop with limited stock, but the stock resets monthly.

Windia's dead? That's surprising... is it just because maplestory in general is dying, or is it server specific?

It got a lot easier compared to that era. Mesos/Decent Equips are easier to obtain, but Windia seems pretty dead lately. I think some of it might be because there's less smegas being used

It's far less pay to win than before. Cubes drop from mining/herbalism at a bit of low rates. Cubes drop from bosses. You get NX (apparently can't say free in front of NX anymore...) from killing bosses daily, and a few other things.

Its not like they're taking half the workers from maplestory and sending them to maplestory2 lol... KMS still gets updates pretty frequently still, and we get all our updates from them. Maplestory1's care should stay the same
The game is more fair towards non-NX users though I suspect it's because Maplestory2 is coming and they don't care about Maplestory as much.
Lots of interesting things like 9 hour long maintenances.

We're in the midst of a [Update 3] maintenance--straight after the 8 hour update patch.
Well I guess you came in at a good time. Lot of interesting things starforce, reward shop, burning characters. Try it.
barely less pay-to-win, you need a lot of time if you plan on spending no nx to get strong

What happened?
There is a great increase in balance, as long as you put time into it then you are able to make decent sums. The new "reward points" system allows you to buy many valuable cash shop items at a limited quantity without needing to put in money but that being said I love the P2W aspect of it, makes it more fun. Also I love gambling. kthxbai
