What do you guys think of quotHoardingquot IGNs?

Ello.
I'm an on and off player. I play for like 2 months then quit for 6-8. Repeat.
It's not just with MapleStory, but naming my characters for whatever game brings me great joy. If I have a nice IGN, I'll enjoy the game alot more.

I told my friend yesterday that i'm dying for the Sengoku classes to return and i already got several igns saved up for them. His response:
"stop hoarding igns so other people who play the game more often can have them."

I'd understand if I'm hoarding stuff like "Cake" "Apples" or "Yuki". I have matsuri and hanami but they use cheat letters (like L's for I's)

Anyways. what are your thoughts on this topic in general?

In terms of principle... no there's nothing wrong with it. If you're an old school thinker unwilling to accept that virtual goods can have monetary value, I can understand why this idea is a hard pill to swallow.

I on the hoarders' side. Even if they lock that account away forever and never plan to use the ign, I still think it's fair. First come, first served, after all.

Cake is in the guild I'm in. And she actually plays.

@natalie: nah I haven't talked to him since summer ended, heard he moved to Bera or something. Telling tall tales is one thing, but scamming is just seriously damn low

@marilanna: yeah he's full of crap. do you know the names of his mules? i heard that he made a separate char to scam

@natalie: couldn't have said it better myself; he'd said he was going to buy my old staff for you as well, but you can see how well that went through haha.

@marilanna: haha yeah, i do. and nah, he spent months talking about it saying that it was going to be a birthday present but he ended up napping on my birthday instead. i don't really care though cause i knew that it was all talk anyway. he likes wearing hats that are way bigger than the size of his head
i hoard some igns but they're ones that people usually wouldn't want anyway, so it's fine. i would pay $100 tops for an ign that i want but usually good ones get sold for up to $300 and i just don't think it's worth it cause if i get scammed it's $300 flushed down the toilet
Omg Nat, do you remember me? <3
Also, I thought Daniel said he was going to buy you a pro IGN...

Anyways TS, I bought Drenches and BridLes for $1 each, come at me bro.
Erm, I do not sell them...
Whether or not you sell them is irrelevant. You hoard "nice" names for a reason. Whether it's to play them or show them off or just because you find them attractive in some way. This all implies they have a certain value. One might call the behavior of hoarding IGNs another "sad attempt to look cool". How can you judge someone else for wanting to purchase something that you admit has some inherent value?

To put the situation in another perspective: Let's say I hoard some paintings I've acquired over time and I got them all for free. I like them. I might not be interested in purchasing paintings from other people. Does it follow that I should find it weird if someone wanted to purchase one of the paintings I've held onto? Assuming I'm not just holding them for sentimental reasons, I've probably kept them because I think they are valuable in some way. It seems perfectly logical that someone else may view these paintings as valuable too, in some way. It seems perfectly reasonable and rational that someone might want to purchase a painting in my collection. I don't think it's any more ridiculous or sad to purchase an IGN than it would be to purchase a painting.
Isn't that hypocritical? You hoard IGNs in games for a reason. Why is it sad if others who missed the opportunity want to pay for said IGNs? By hoarding them you are implying they have some type of value.
Erm, I do not sell them...

i don't think hoarding ign's is bad/a problem, if anything it's something that the old vets can use as an investment.

what i DO have a problem with however, is when you save character ign's... and then never play the game again, ever. not even to sell the darn things, that DOES piss me off.

This happens in all games and you know what they say, early bird gets the worm. Also, I wouldn't consider ir hoarding if you plan on using it in the future.

Yeah, I do this. :c

This game made me that way. I never had a problem before. But for some reason it just REALLY bothers me if my IGNs aren't nice.

Putting it aside for a future character seems fair to me. Though people selling hundreds of IGNs for hundreds of dollars, is just kind of corrupt in my eyes.

I dont think theres anything wrong with hoarding IGN's, as long as they plan on using/selling it. if they just make a char and leave it unattended for 5 years, i would be a little disgruntled but meh.

I don't mind if people put it aside. As long as they use it in the future, I guess. idk. I don't really care.
From personal experience, I have been stuck on the character creation screen because I couldn't think of anything.

I say anyone can save whatever the heck they want, but only if you're actually going to put it to use in the future.
I save IGN's and use them for new characters so I don't have to sit there for twenty minutes thinking of a decent or good one.

all good names are took

if you can think of something to save for class you will make and its not taken best to save it...

i do however dont think its right to hold them if you plain on the following...
selling them...
not using them just to have the name....

but if you plain on using the name and playing the class you have the name for its all cool
