-spots are important for merchant guilds to overprice stuff for the desperate
-said desperate people are willing to spring for them, especially when it comes to items that barely appear on market
-sometimes systematically looking for stuff takes long enough for someone else looking for the exact same thing to take it before you reach it (I had this happen a frustrating amount of times. God help you if one of the shops have something sold at lower than average price)
-not many people get owls like all the time
-people with garbage in their store either are A: holding a spot for guildies/merchant guildies/ buddies, or B: doing it to spite merchants on purpose

They actually tend to extend them by 24 hours. So it's a little ironic that people complain about "losing" them when they're actually going to get them boosted.
