Question about the Persona series

I have a question about the games....
Is Shin Megami Tensei part of the Persona series? because I saw Shin Megami Tensei on Wiki but I'm not sure if it's related, because I played Shin Megami Tensei on the DS, not sure which and I loved it, and yesterday I found the anime and P3P which is just so awesome ;_; Unfortunately I don't have a PSP so I was hoping there was something for the Playstation 2 or DS or something.... ._.
Can anyone answer?

@Yellondaz: The one's that I know of are: Persona 3, Persona 3 F.E.S (Unless F.E.S is like.. a part of Persona 3), and then there's Persona 4... I think PS2 also has Persona 2, but I'm not sure...
Look up the company Atlus and you'll find more of the games that you are looking for.

Well when they localized the games over here, Atlus decided to label all of them with Shin Megami Tensei even though SMT is a series of its own.
Persona 1, 2, 3, and 4 are their own games though like malapo said they're sort of like a spin off. Persona 1 and 2 are on the PS1 but Persona 1 was made into a PSP version also. The PSP version of Persona 1 is better since the content was not changed and kept everything compared to the PS1 which had certain things removed.

As for Persona 3 and 4 they are on the PS2 but Persona 3 was remade again into a Persona 3:FES for the PS2 which included everything from the original plus an after story called the Answer, a new difficulty level, and some more demons to shoot out of your head. xP Persona 3 was then remade again into a PSP. The PSP version unfortunately does not have the space for the Answer so it's not included but they added in a new option which allowed you to choose between 2 genders. It also gives 2 more difficulty levels which were Beginner(Easiest) and Maniac(Hardest).

Persona 1 and 2 are similar to the other games but 3 and 4 are a bit different since they incorporate a system called Social Links which makes the game 50% reading and the other 50% is similar to the other series. So if you're not into the reading part then you might want to avoid 3 and 4. And yes it's a necessary part of the game.
In the Social Links you increase the bonds of the companions or soon to be lovers(yes you can get multiple girls/guys(PSP)) in order to give more exp to your demons which are called Personas. Sort of like a dating simulator where you make choices on what to say.
Most people(including me) describe 3 and 4 to be easy even on the highest difficulty level so if your looking for a challenge:

You can try out the games called Nocturne or Digital Devil Saga (2) which are on the PS2 or Devil Summoner (2) which has a completely different game play style.
... I just found out about it after so long?

Thanks for explaining some of the differences! <3
Isn't it originally a PS2 game? I played through a good bit of it on the PSP, so when I looked it up I saw it was a PS2 port.
