Should I be calling the cops?

My girlfriend has a pretty twisted mother.. Her beliefs on things in this world are beyond what i can reason with her. She blames her daughter for everything that's ever happened to her, like getting divorced, kidney problems, and having to give birth to her. Over the course of my girlfriend's entire life, her mom has choked her, slashed up her neck, and punched her. Although shes never called the cops or anything because she's scared of losing her mom, and doesn't know what her mom would do without her - especially because her health problems are going to get her dead soon.

If i call the cops, they're totally going to just take her mom away right?
Don't know what else to do, or what else she could do..
