It's mainly because the map texture is actually lots of little squares stuck together overlapping, like a [url=http://www.milwaukeerenaissance.com/EllasPatchQuilts/EllasQuiltGallery?action=download&upname=GrafGrowingBx613.jpg]patch quilt[/url].
I guess messing with the graphics and moving around causes the little squares to overlap differently, and a part that was supposed to be covered comes out on top.
Maybe it takes Maplers at random?
I think I believe in Santa now.
