It could be a lot of things. Start with the simple ones. Is you wireless turned on? Many laptops have a switch (slide or rocker) that turns your wireless off and on.
And before you react, I'm not trying to be insulting. There is a reason why K.I.S.S. is the first rule of IT support staff. In case you're not familiar with that acronym...

Does your laptop connect via WiFi anywhere else..?
Like at school, a library or a coffee shop..?
