Building Computer Help

Hey. I'm planning on building a computer (1st time) with my cousin and need some help picking out parts. I'm not too knowledgeable on choosing parts but here are some parts I have chosen. Budget max $800 including tax/shipping. Games I will be playing

[*]Processor - link or link what's the difference between these 2?

[*]HDD - link not too knowledgeable on picking HDD's so just chose one with 500gb

[*]Graphics Card - link

[*]Motherboard - link not sure on choosing, will it suppport my graphics card / processor? *i have a different one in 1st combo deal on bottom*

[*]Ram - unsure which will support my motherboard, only looking for 4gb (is 8gb really necessary?)

[*]Case - link or link probably going to choose 1st one, will it fit everything / airflow and wiring?

[*]Cd Drive - link unsure about this but i think any one will do?

[*]PCI Wireless Card - link unsure again but i think anyone will do, heard they're better than usb adapters

[*]PSU - have an 800w psu in 2nd combo deal, is 850w too much / too little?

currently looking for some good combo deals
maybe this? motherboard / processor combo
and psu / graphics card combo

current total for what i have listed is $720
is anything missing?

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

and just a few more questions.
What's the difference between 3gb/s and 6gb/s hdd's? is it worth getting a 6gb/s hdd? i could get this instead of the one in the combo but would make the total go up $80 (buy combo seperate + this hdd)

What is exactly bottle necking? Will my computer be bottle necked?

and do you think this computer will be able to run games in the future(3-4years) decently?
The mobo will work. Just so you know, you won't be able to SLI/xfire in the future (though, you could always sell your GPU and buy a better single card GPU).

I would get the Sapphire and used that $20 discount promo code.

The Antec PSU you got is from Basiq, which isn't the best PSU line from Antec. Get this one instead - which is only $2 more after factoring shipping cost and it will draw more allow you to draw more power from the +12v rail - meaning you have a better chance in upgrading your GPU in the future. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371020

As for the 3GB/s vs. 6GB/s, I just briefly look at a benchmark, and it seem that their isn't any difference in performance, ATM. It's nice to have that option on your mobo for the future upgrades, but 6GB/s HDDs haven't fully mature ATM, that you could just save your money for now.

Bottlenecking is when a certain component is holding back another component overall performance. Like a grouping a Pentium 4 processor back in 2006 with a GTX580. But you shouldn't worry about bottlenecks with the setup you got.

If I were to guess, I would expect the first few would be expensive. Around at least $200 (depending on how much you skim down on like the PSU and CPU, you may end up having enough money to spare). Reason why I said this is because the AM3+ mobo is being release a few months before the release of AM3+ processors. Another reason is the ASRock 890FX Deluxe4 mobo (a current AM3 mobo - will not support AM3+ processors) is ~$170 already, and the one I mentioned will be the upgraded version of that mobo - ASRock 890FX Deluxe5.

As to when it will be release, maybe at the end of this month or next month. I'm not sure, though, as I don't think there was actually a release date. It was only speculation on my part. If you can't wait, then you don't necessary have to. I only suggested it as a a future-proofing aspect, that you may or may not do.

i'll post an updated build tomorrow. do you know about how long until those mobos are released and maybe a guess on cost? i still have an $800 budget and my birthdays next week so im not sure if i can wait. and thanks to everyone for the help

Yeah, for most people, RAM is just RAM. Pick whatever that is cheapest RAM that has good reviews. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226092

When you finished, repost the revise build, so we can see what you have change/gotten easier.

Edit: I don't know how much it will cost, but if you could wait a bit, try getting the AM3+ motherboard. It will allow you to upgrade to bulldozer in the future, and it will be backwards compatible with AM3 processor if you can't afford the AMD Bulldozer line right away. ASRock is currently making a mobo to be put up on the market soon.

So I should get the PII x4 955, HD5770 ( most games i will be playing probably won't even need the 6850 anyways ) and a different psu.

@qwan456 i'll look into those cases
@djpinc19 my cousin said he could get me an OS but thank you

and any "DDR3" ram will work?

The i5-750 out performs the Phenom II X6 and the Phemon II X4 975. No one can go wrong with either Seagate or WD on the market today, although the latter holds better value with the larger selection of hard drives offered. The two sentences about RAM are obvious (but I won't bash your syntax.) The prebuilt system is a poor investment as the 300-watt PSU holds little room for a video card upgrade and the Athlon II line is a serious step back from the already affordable Phenom line (except for the Phenom II X4 840 which is an Athlon II X4 core.)

The only difference between the two processor is the ~200MHz difference, which you won't see much, if any, difference in real life performance. Get the PII x4 955 and used that $20 to get an aftermarket HSF like the Coolermaster 212+.

If all you need is 500GB, than that WD HDD is good.

The GPU is good. For the games you are playing though, you could get the HD5770 and save up a bit. You should be able to play most games on high. SCII on ultra.

Mobo is incompatible as already been said.

2x2GB of DDR3 RAM will be enough.

I hate cases with doors. They get in a way a lot and because of that, you could end up breaking off the door. I would go with the Antec 300 or look at the Haf 912 in that price range.

I would go with a different PSU. From the +12v rail distribution of that PSU, it looks more like a 750w PSU than a 850w. The Antec TP-650 would be more than enough to power that system.
@frozenmeaty, a 3.4gHz quad-core AMD is probably better than most i5s and some i7s out there, so you know
Overall, the i5/i7 perform better than the PII x4. Like the i5-750 will perform better in most applications than the AMD PII x4 965 he picked.

Everything important has been posted (especially Etchay's comments, but I'll give a metion about PSUs) although I would disregard Elzonal's post because it's just poor advice for the most part. I've never heard of ecollegepc so I can't say anything about it. Reputable online vendors include Newegg, Tigerdirect, NCIX, and Amazon.

You really only need to go up to 650 watts for a computer containing one video card. Actually the Nvidia GTX480 has the highest recommended system wattage at 650 watts and the Radeon 6850 has a recommended system wattage of at least 500 watts. Check with the manufacturer details on the video card to see if you can get a cheaper and more reliable PSU; Raidmax PSUs are bashed and hated by user reviews. PSU manufacturers that remain to be popular and reliable are Seasonic, Corsair (things have changed for some of their lineups however), XFX, Antec, Enermax, and PC&C.

You're missing the operating system.

• Processor - link or link what's the difference between these 2? First one has more power, so first is faster + better

• HDD - link not too knowledgeable on picking HDD's so just chose one with 500gb Might wanna go for a 6gb/s one for like $20-$30 more

• Graphics Card - Decent. Should run most things fine

• Motherboard - link not sure on choosing, will it suppport my graphics card / processor? *i have a different one in 1st combo deal on bottom* *You need an AMD motherboard or nothing will work* Any matching motherboard over $100 should be fine

• Ram - unsure which will support my motherboard, only looking for 4gb (is 8gb really necessary?) Depends what you're using it for (I don't think any games use more than 2-3 gb of ram, but if you move into video editing / 3d modeling you might wanna spring for more). Try for 6 gb?

• Case - link or link probably going to choose 1st one, will it fit everything / airflow and wiring? I prefer the Antec

• Cd Drive - link unsure about this but i think any one will do? Fine

• PCI Wireless Card - link unsure again but i think anyone will do, heard they're better than usb adapters

• PSU - have an 800w psu in 2nd combo deal, is 850w too much / too little? Should be fine with one graphics card

If your budget is $800 you need to add another $60-$80 for ram and then another 9% for tax and then a bit for shipping

@BanditZ1234, you'll be able to run sc2 and what you've mentioned on any computer that costs $600+

@Etchay Does the motherboard in the combo support my graphics card? and thanks for the tip on the cd drive

@froznemeaty it's mainly going to be used for music / browsing / gaming. I usually play the more "anime" style type mmo's. Some free fps games and thinking of playing dragon nest and considering sc2.
