What determines the success rate of enhancement scrolls?

I searched on google and nothing came up because this is fairly specific information. Anyway, equipment enhancement scrolls say they succeed at an 80% rate, decreasing by 10% for each success. This wording really confuses me as I do not make assumptions. For the sake of this success rate, is a "success" when a equip enhancement scroll works on an item(thereby basing success rate off the stars the item has above its name)? Or is a "success" based off other scrolls that have worked for the item(thereby being based off the "+X" the item has next to its name, in parentheses).

I am really confused on this one because two enhancement scrolls just blew up two of my items, and neither of them had any stars, hence neither of them had any enhancement scrolls work on them. If it was based on stars, then I just had an 80% success rate fail twice in a row?.. ....REALLY? It would make MUCH more sense if it was based on the item's "+X" value(from other scrolls) because both item was at least a +4, thereby having a much lower chance to succeed.

Summarized: Is the success rate of e/e scrolls based off # of stars, or the "+X" value?
2 failing 80%s is a 4% chance, so 1in 25 it will happen...But 3 fail 80%s is a 0.8% chance. So I'd try again if I were you?
Yep. Tried again on an experimental Long sword that I used 100% scrolls on. It worked....
Think of it this way. They are 20% success rate equipment destruction scrolls. Doesnt seem that impossible now
Nothing is impossible. Its just so improbable that you naturally begin to question the numbers you were provided with. I just used 3 dark 70% scrolls on a polearm and 2/3 worked. The 3rd that didn't, did NOT blow the polearm up.

Anyway... it hardly seems fair that potential scrolls and dark scrolls blow your items up if they fail. They should be like dark scrolls, and blow the item up on a 50% rate, at least. I hate relying on chance, I would much rater see consistent values should I choose to upgrade items. Its also rather uncreative to have everything determined by a percentage.

You can only use Enhancement scrolls once all slots have been used up (except for hammer slots but once you hammer, you need to use the slot)

The success rate for the first enhancement scroll is always either 80% (reg enhance) or 100% (Adv. Enhance)
For every ENHANCEMENT scroll you use afterwards, the success rate decreases by 10%.

Eg. You use a reg enhance scroll, that's 80% chance for the first enhance
You use another one, that's 70%
You use another one, that's 60%
You use another one, it blows up, you cry and come to basil to make a thread and everyone flames you so you go live under a rock so no one can track you down irl to start telling you that using Enhancements can destroy your equipment but you discover that you can't get food without people seeing you and you decide to just live under a rock so you'll either die of starvation or you'll die because the rock squashes you.

Moral of the story, don't enhance stuff you find valuable.

The success rate for enhancement scrolls are determined by the number of successful enhancements that the item has undergone, i.e., the number of stars over the name.
