But now there's this "deletion standby" which apparently makes you wait a day before the slot opens up ._.
Can I somehow bypass this?

But it does, some peoples are morons and don't watch what they are doing or don't double check before they delete either. One of my friends also deleted the wrong character by mistake.
Plus this can help if you get hacked, you got 24 hours to save your character.
Went through this as well. Needed slots for links.. thing was, it was first generation pre bb aran since release. I had to endure 24 hours of guilt and memories. I almost didnt do it but I held my resolve and 24 hours later my aran was gone forever. >.>
I'm glad i deleted what i did before they implemented this. Good to know this is a thing now too though thanks OP.

Well on the bright side, you don't have to worry about accidentally deleting your character...
Yea it is a pain having to wait 24hrs especially when u need the character slot straight away! Sorry u have to wait or pay for another slot...
