On topic- you have to start new characters (they allow more than one this time), but like was said, you can level up any time you want by going to Cody.
Cody will also provide weapons (and sometimes armor) for the class, but only very high level stuff. There's no special source of mesos in the game, so you can fill your inventory with Reverse weapons then NPC them to build up a bank to allow you to play.

Unfortunately, just leveling up isn't the "magic bullet" it sounds like. I "Cody'd" my character to level 120, but found that all the stuff I'd missed along the way like the special rings, hats and equips I'd bought and made in the regular game really DO play a large part in making a character with survivability. His defense and HP are a lot lower than my normal character, so it's not all that easy having taken the shortcut to that level.

Interesting also to learn how dependent I've become on my pet to auto-pot for me. There's no Cash Shop and thus no CS items so I keep dying when I forget the "little things" like watching my HP more closely. Ouch.
