Why does my internet not work?

So i have it plugged in downstairs for like 6 years but i want to move it up for a stronger signal. I plug in the phone line and it comes up with the internet is limited no matter where i plug it besides downstairs. Is there something wrong with every phone line or is the one downstairs just linked to the isp or something?

If you only have one phone number at your house, then ALL the phone jacks connect to the ISP.
If you have a second phone line with a separate number, like for a home office, then that phone jack may not have Internet service on it.

Assuming you only have one phone number at your house, make sure there's no "DSL filter" attached to the phone jack you're trying to use.
There should be a "DSL filter" plugged in at every phone jack that has a telephone connected, but NOT at the phone jack your DSL modem plugs in.
(Most DSL filters look like this: http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSUM4YkIA0XDlyZ9n6MPJP4DL1gMc2i7STDLn_eI1GZf12Cs_c0rw )

If there's a filter like this on the wall jack you're trying to use, take it out then plug the modem directly into the wall jack.

Most likely your phoneline downstairs is the only one linked to the ISP. There's a special adapter probably connected from the phone line to your internet box. If you move that, there should be no problems.
