Evan Quests

Is it mandatory to do the storyline quests? Just wondering because they take a while to do and I don't get much exp from them. I understand that I get SP for skills, but its not like those early skills are gonna be used later on It's just that I'd rather be using the time to train because I would be a much higher level if I just was grinding. And I could always do the quests later, correct?
