Wifi Range Extender?

Okay, so a few of you may have seen my internet problem post but anyways. Are wifi range extenders affective? I'm thinking about buying one since my room is a deadspot from wifi and it sucks cuz i cant really move the router since it literally only works in my brother's room. So do they really work? and if so, which one do i buy? tytytytytytytyty
plus, i live in a single story house js

@Ninjasaur Like Burning said, your best solution is probably to use a pair of "powerline ethernet adapters" to extend the LAN line from your router to your computer using the AC power wiring in your house to carry the signal, instead of using WiFi.

You need a pair of adapters like these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=ethernet+powerline+adapter&N=-1&isNodeId=1

One unit plugs into an AC wall outlet near the router and another plugs into an AC wall outlet in your room. The router connects to the powerline adapter near it with an ethernet cable and the one in your room plugs into the LAN socket on your computer. They send the Internet connection from the router over the power wiring in the house so you don't have to worry about WiFi at all.

They can be faster and more reliable than WiFi. The only thing likely to be better would be to run an actual ethernet cable through the walls and attic between your room and the router.

(The reason there's a big price difference between some of those units listed on Newegg is because some come as single adapters (you need 2), and some come as a pair of units in one package.)

@Ninjasaur Follow-up... I just installed a pair of Rosewill 200mbps powerline ethernet adapters to extend my network out to the TV for the Tivo box because the WiFi signal to there was so weak and slow. Plugged them into the AC outlets next to the devices, plugged the ethernet cables into them, they synced up and connected without me having to do anything at all. Works great and the monitoring program included in the package indicates I'm getting 136mbps throughput, far, far better than the WiFi ever gave me.

If anything, an ethernet cord would help, I don't really like wifi extenders/repeaters. I lost some speed through the exchange. Though if you
want to go wireless totally, it is a feasible option.

Yes, though powerline adapters are better for adding one out of range wired device to a home network.
