Connecting xbox controller to pc

I have Windows 8 and a wired xbox 360 controller. Yesterday I hooked up the controller to my computer, recognized the device, and worked with no problem. I didn't have anything downloaded or installed at the time. It's the next day and now it's not working. When I hook it up, the light comes for a second and disappears. My computer doesn't recognize it either. I tried installing the accessory software (for windows 7), but still nothing. How do I get this to work again
