Golden Anvil Fusing

When an item is fused with another item, do the two items used disappear?

Let's say I have a wooden fence and a dragon khanjar. If I fuse the dragon khanjar with the wooden fence, to produce a dragon khanjar with wooden fence stats, does the actual khanjar disappear? Do I need both of those items to perform the fusion?

If that is the case, then why in the HELL do people keep wasting perfectly good dragon khanjars on absolutely useless fusing endeavors? Are people seriously taking these beautiful shields and DESTROYING them just so they -- some non thief class that shouldn't have the item in the first place -- can run around with a dragon khanjar and look pretty? As someone who's just looking for an average d. khanjar in Windia, the thought of some puckered up heneho destroying something so rare and beautiful solely for cosmetic reasons makes me rage with the force of ten thousand suns.

edit: Site won't let me post for another five minutes. The first two replies delight me. Thank you. RAGE AVERTED; LOCKING THREAD.
