Um, it might be different for the up coming one, but for the last one, it was an event that gave major exp. There were different stages, most of them composed of killing a boss, others making you wait. Each time you go to the next stage, you get a large amount of EXP that scales to your level. Also, when you finish each stage, they give you "friendship points", which allow you to buy totems for stats and attack.
