headset help

so I bought the astro a40's recently but my friends told me my mic is all fuzzy and unclear when i talk. I also cant use the mix amp because i dont have the optical cable input for my laptop. So i was planning to either go back to the store and send back in and get a new a40 since this one is faulty, or get a refund and buy another headset.
So with that being said, i was wondering if you guys know any good quality headsets or a way for me to be able to use the mix amp on my laptop.
Thanks

It's the same story with the 1400, but for what it's worth, I'd stick with the music headphone + mic combo.
I heard the Steelseries 9H or 5HV3 and the Corsair 1400 is good...
Does anyone care about my actual first-hand experience with all three of these?

I heard the Steelseries 9H or 5HV3 and the Corsair 1400 is good, but I personally recommend getting a headphone (not a headset) and just grab a microphone separately instead, so instead of needing to replace everything when something breaks, you can replace the headphone or the mic individually. There are a decent number of cheap options for microphones out there like the bundles of clip-ons from Neewer if you're really on a budget, or any variety of the many lav mics available on the market, or desktop options like the ATR2500 or CAD U1 if you are stationary most of the time.
There is no firmware for astros a40 only for a50's. http://www.astrogaming.com/firmware/firmware.html
I own astro a40's with the mix amp and the optic cable : what I hear is amazing but everybody's telling me the microphone is the worst thing ever. I downloaded the firmware for the mix amp, didn't solve anything so I just suck it up and people hear my crappy voice.

The optic cable amplifies the bad quality of the microphone and the good quality of the sound that you hear. If you can't plug in the mix amp into the optic cable refund it, it's not worth the 100'ish bucks
ahh ty so much! I kinda thought to myself it wasnt worth it if i cant use my mix amp anyways. btw do you know any other good headset that i should buy?

It depends what your headset is for. If its for gaming purposes go for turtle beaches, if its just for talking with friends aim for logitec

You have to update the firmware for the headset on their official webpage. It should solve the headset problems, especially the mic. You can still use the amp with the laptop, but you cannot use the 7.1 surround sound without the optical cable. You can use the headset to talk and get standard audio
