Dota2 beginners guide

I heard a bunch of you guys talking about how good this game was, so I decided to give it a try. I already had steam so I went ahead and got dota2.
the game look pretty fun, but when I went to play it, there were so many characters to choose from, so I picked a random character. It must have been a bad one because half of my team knew that I was new player, but got really mad at me, I didnt know how to do a thing. I read a couple of guides, but I thought it would be best to hear from you guys instead.
thanks for the help.

It's actually worse to hear anecdotal advice from the average DOTA 2 player because the game is too complex to summarize in a few short paragraphs. It's far better to put your brain to it by reading the guides and either analyzing lots of competitive replays or playing games and sucking it up that you're going to be bad.

Purge's guide is a good place to start. Even Purge's YouTube series is quite good for learning once you at least familiarize yourself with the heroes and items. Your options for competitive replays are YouTube or Twitch VODs, with the usual preferred casting studio being GD, Beyond the Summit, and JoinDOTA. The most recent premiere Western tournament was Starladder Season 8 Finals. If your internet sucks, then you can at least watch The International replays within the client.
