Ok everyone saying this is redundant, this is a known fact, homophobic guys are not gay, they are in fact quite the opposite. Homophobic people are scared of homosexuals (gays). Homophobic guys are not gay. I think the word you are looking for is homophilic.

I don't hate gays but I'm just heavily disgusted with their sexual acts. Does this make me a homophobe? If they're chill and they don't try to hit on me it's fine.

I think its some sort of complex about how homophobic men are afraid of not gays, but to compete with other men or something. I learned it in English during Hamlet.

It went something along the lines of: Men from the beginning have always competed for other men, and woman were the unconscious symbol of a man's trophy, because he had won her against other men, and gets offsprings that will further that sort of dominance. According to Frued, who wrote Manhood In America, (I think) homophobics are scared of other men not of the gay relationship because they look at that as some sort of pact. Animals like ourselves pride on the existence of dominance, so when they see two men get together they get scared and start to get envious.

The explanation of your article can somehow correlate with I guess envy, which branches to love in a way, and that's where that literal phallic symbol comes to play. It could be that or the certain feel of survival and getting the better chances to survive (because in a man's world survival = dominance) and reproduce more offsprings can get a man aroused unconsciously.

Don't take my word on it though. I'm neither homophobic nor gay, so I wouldn't know how it would be in that situation, I'm being as empathetic my imagination of this theory can be. I tried to piece fragments of theories I learned awhile ago, with a little synthesis, so don't bash me, hahaa.
