Will There be a Second Iraq War? Insurgents unleashed a new wave of attacks today in Iraq, killing at least 53 people. At least 40 people were killed yesterday in Iraq. According to the United Nations mission to Iraq, last month's violence claimed the lives of 761 Iraqis and wounded 1,771 others. Iraq is weathering its deadliest outburst of violence since 2008, with more than 2,000 people killed since the start of April this year. The bloodshed appears to be largely the work of resurgent Sunni militants such as al-Qaida, feeding off Sunni discontent with the Shiite-led government. Do you guys think there will be a second Iraq War? Why or why not? And if it's addressed in a way that's relevant to the first question, what's your opinion on th

Is Science a Religion? According to Oxford, it is. In the first link, Oxford finds that some beliefs can be related to mental illnesses. In the second link, Oxford found out that non-religious people "believe" in science more when they are under stress. This doesn't delegitimize the institution of science in of itself, but it probes into how and why non-religious people value science. I just find it interesting that non-religious people's emotions can effect how they think about science. If you're an atheist, do you think this applies to you? Do your emotions affect how you think about science?

What are Your Regrets It has been a lousy couple of days and I couldn't sleep last night. I feel like it's time to reflect on the past so we can think about the things we can do to better ourselves in the future. So is there anyone you want to apologize to but you never got the opportunity because you don't see them anymore, or you can't find the nerve? What are you sorry for? Take advantage of the anonymity on Basilmarket and just get it out there to unburden yourself! I'm sorry for not being their for my dad when my mom died. I'm sorry for not telling my mom "I love you" enough while I still can. I'm sorry for not being there for my dad. I'm sorry for all the sad strangers I see everyday and not saying anything to cheer them up.

Is It Legal for the Government to Spy on You? So I came home last night to play Maplestory and stuff. After that, I checked the news before I went to sleep to see what's going on in the world, and this piece by Glenn Greenwald blew up everywhere, with every single news website referencing it. I was tired at the time and I didn't really care, but now I am scared! I know, it's crazy. Here's the story: the US government is listening in on our phonecalls and wiretapping us! MILLIONS of American phone calls, both foreign and domestic. MILLIONS! I don't know about you, but I find it very hard to believe that there are millions of terrorists in the USA. Th

South Africans Killing Each Other It's quite confusing and I don't exactly know who's killing whom. Deadly violence, illegal strikes and union infighting have plagued South Africa's platinum belt since last year's deadly strikes. At least 2 people have been shot, 1 fatally, in an ongoing union rivalry at South Africa's troubled Lonmin platinum mine. Workers at Lonmin's Marikana mine--the site of last year's violent strike in which police killed 34 protesters--staged a two-day wildcat strike in mid-May to demand that NUM vacate the office where Monday's shooting took place. Meanwhile, mining giant Glencore Xstrata said Monday that it had dismissed around 1,000 workers who went on a strike last week. Things are getting hairy. Apparently, all

Anyone Who Lives in Rural America? So my uncle moved to an anonymous small rural city a while ago, and he is having a culture shock. One thing is how laid back and friendly everyone was. Another thing is the bad hygiene. I know this sounds racist and I'm stereotyping all rural people to be like hillbillies, but that's just what my uncle said. Don't shoot the messenger. Feel free to tell me if I'm wrong. Anyways, my uncle is a small business owner and he noticed that rural folks aren't motivated by money to do their jobs like the people in the big cities are. I have no idea what that means, and I don't think he knows how to explain it, either. Can someone help? If not by money, what are people in rural cities motivated by to do their jobs?

Separation of Church and State I'm a Christian and I think about religion a lot. I often wonder what it means to be a Christian, and to what extent should my beliefs affect others. I know that the 1st Amendment in the Bill of Rights protects my right to free speech and my free exercise of religion, but I'm starting to question it. To help atheists understand, I love Jesus the same way you love your friends and family. I believe in God the same way anyone would believe in the good of humanity. As far as freedom goes, our beliefs should be protected irregardless if you agree or disagree with it. I understand that not everyone beliefs are the same, and that's certainly true among Christians. I believe that God and Jesus loves all us, and I als

The Left-Handed People So I heard 10% of people are left-handed. That's a lot of people, but it's still pretty rare. So I've been thinking and I wonder, is left-handedness a mental illness? If science people look into it, they will probably discover a cure for left-handedness (maybe?). That would be nice for all the left-handed people who feel left out (no pun intended). I don't know, what do you think? If science people discover that left-handedness is a mental illness, should they create a cure?
