Need help with history essay introduction

I have a history paper due tomorrow (1800 words )

It's on mostly 4th century Europe, and my chosen thesis is the fusion of Christianity and classics in Pre-historic Europe.
The essay topic is "What have you learned so far in this course"

The body paragraph is not that much of a problem, but I'm really stumped on how I should start this.
It is a formal essay, so I can't start like "Well so far in this course, I learned that bla blabl ablablablalba..."

How should I start a formal essay on such an informally-expressed essay topic?
Write in third person and not in first person. Just think of it as an informative essay.
You can start off with an event that occurred in early 4th century (include dates throughout) and your intro would be basically how that event played a role in later events of 4th century Europe (that you learned). Or you can start from the middle 4th century and explain the past that led to that particular event then move forward.
(ex: how the collapse of the Roman Empire (why/how/when/what/who) led to the beginning of the Dark Age(5 w's again) and whatever comes after dark ages(forgot since i took world history ages ago))
Remember to elaborate and include necessary details like factors, downfalls, hope, coping mechanisms (development of Christianity) etc.
Not sure if I explained what I'm trying to say well, but yeah.
Thanks *w*
really helped me out.
