Polyphasic sleep

Hello basillers
I've recently started trying out polyphasic sleeping!

Today is day 3 of my experiment.
Has anyone of you every tried it out?
What do you guys think of it?

@OmNomBom No I haven't! I've heard of it before though, and apparently it isn't dangerous I would imagine it to be quite scary if it happened.

@LikeeNo0ther: Have you ever experienced hypnagogic sleep paralysis? You're in a half-sleep/half-awake state. Your mind is awake, but your body isn't. I used to get this all the time as a child and it FREAKED ME OUT. But now that I know what it is, it's not so bad

@Johasua I'm just curious and I'm interested in stuff to do with sleep/dreams and the brain.

@OmNomBom That's amazing. It's also another reason of me trying this out. So that I can dream straight away and remember them

@RJustice You have to adapt to a strict sleep schedule. Mine's not that hardcore and it consists of 3 hours of core sleep and 3 20 mins nap throughout the day.

@MrMojoRisin No one really knows that yet for not a lot has done this over a long period of time. But your logic is reasonable cos as I said before, it takes out the stages where your body grows and recovers. ;O

So, we go into REM. I get that. How exactly do you GO INTO REM though

I could only do this if I had no obligations to any other people and that's just not the case
@RJustice It's basically a sleep schedule that tricks your brain into jumping straight to REM sleep (the stage of sleep that makes you feel rested) when you sleep so that you can feel fully rested even with 2-4 hours of sleep. Gives you more awake time
I always go straight into REM, people don't believe me lol. I'll fall asleep during breakfast/lectures/on the way to uni, and have really funky dreams during a 20 minute nap. :O

@chaostheory I planned out my schedule so that I can continue polyphasic sleeping even after school starts

@chaostheory I'm trying it now cos it's the Summer holidays too 8 hrs of school? What kind of country does that? :X

@Telatsu Yes, that's true. It takes out the stages of sleep where your body grows and recovers. But no to that second point, it doesn't give you "just enough" energy to get through the day. It actually gives you more energy because you would have slept the full 2 hour cycle of REM sleep, while normal sleep doesn't. I would say this kind of sleep is for people who needs more time to get stuff done and sleeps late but wake up early. (Sleeping late and waking up early disrupts REM sleep, therefore you feel tired all throughout the day and be unable to focus) Thank you, I'll see how long I can keep this up for!

@LikeeNo0ther: Yeah, but doesn't that mean you don't spend enough time in the other sleep cycles, so your body will still eventually under go the stress of someone that has a sleep disorder. Sounds like it's just putting it off for later, and shouldn't be done unless in a necessary situation. Plus, "Being rested" isn't the same as your body physically recovering from the strains of the day. Especially if you have a labor intensive work load. This would be a good way to overwork your body after a certain amount of time. Also, I could totally see how this would last you through a day, yet it appears to be something akin to "Just enough" energy to get through the day while staying awake more, rather than having an abundance of energy that a regular sleep cycle would give you. Anyways, good luck with this!

i've heard of it, you need a really flexible schedule for it to work though
If you're tricking your brain into thinking you're fully rested, does that mean your body isn't actually getting the rest it would require?
It tricks your brain into jumping straight into the phase of sleep that makes you rested, it doesn't just think you're rested.

@whatshesaid Hahahaaa the sleep schedule I'm taking is called the Everyman sleep schedule. It consists of 3 hours of core sleep and 3 20 min naps throughout the day. I'm waiting for my core sleep atm. Mine is set at 2am

@Looooser
I don't think you can actually :O Cos that would probably make the brain go back to thinking that you're sleeping normally again. LOL make sure you have lots of stuff to do during your awake times. I'm on summer holiday right now and decided to try it. I get bored so easily! Thank God I have a friend who's doing it with me though, helps me stick with it After my core sleep later at 2am, it would be my 4th day!

@Cruze From all the googling that I've done, majority said there were no side effects. (Except the exhaustion during the first week of adapting) I'm only on day 3 right now so I can't be too sure yet

@Noirel Yeaah LOL I have blocks of 5/6/5 hours of awake time in between naps. It is really tiring the first week :X

@whatshesaid So you tried polyphasic before? Or was it just a thing that happened

hmm... being fully rest in 2 hours? i think that happened to me before.

Yeah, but you spend only 4-6 hours awake at a time right o-o?

Reply December 23, 2010 - edited

@Noirel Apparently it makes you feel fully rested eventhough you've only had 2 hrs (or in my case 4) of sleep ;D
