Christmas has changed

Everyone is all excited about what they are going to get for Christmas, and how happy their items will make them once they get them, but does anyone just care about being with their family's for once, gathering around and sharing the joy? Isn't that what Christmas is really about? Apparently not. Everyone I know is all about what they are going to receive and not what they are going to give. I wish I could have a nice family to give gifts too but my family never likes anything I get them because I never talk to them, and they are so selfish that they actually get upset for getting something that they didn't want that much. When I was younger, I never got any gifts because I never asked for any, and I still don't. But there are times where I still get gifts, because a person cares about me so much that they just wanna give me something even though I didn't ask for it. Christmas is a selfish holiday now, where everyone just want's to receive and not to give, and they feel like they are forced to give because it's Christmas. I give presents because I want too not because I have too. What I'm saying is don't be so focused on a Christmas list and getting everything you want, just think about the time you are going to spend with your loved ones and making them happy, because honestly that's all I want for Christmas.

I'm not excited for presents anymore.
The only thing I look forward to in Christmas time is the break/food/family.

I don't like christmas much, my parents are divorced so we don't really have a family christmas, we usually end up spending some time eating cake and then I spend the rest of the day in my room watching tv. I'm not all for getting presents either, I just hate having to act all excited and call all my relatives to thank them oh so much for sending me a book that was written for 12 year olds. We also don't really have that much money for exciting gifts.

I do like christmas time tho, I like the way we used to spent christmas when I was younger and the lights, the snow, christmas trees. I don't think we will even have a tree this year.

If you have a gathering and dinner for it (I'm not Christian, and is Chinese, and still have like 10 parties around Christmas time), it serves it's purpose. Gifts are just an awesome part of it.

I enjoy the Christmas Spirit and spending time with family. I don't expect gifts, they're just a plus.
Although you didn't specify any particular generation, your whole analysis of the meaning of Christmas is based on the naive idea that at any one point in history the holiday was not guided by political interests or selfishness. As such, it just seems like another complaint about how the state of affairs of society has been gradually deteriorating, while cheerily dreaming about a non-existent halcyon era. Granted, your complaints span over many more years than the typical "generational complaint" threads, but, nonetheless, it is still about what values a generation (supposedly) had compared to a newer one and the thread just seems to be based on the same self-righteous precipice as other rants in a similar vein. What upsets me is not that people express their opinions but that a whole group of people is lambasted because they failed to meet some ideal that was, in all honesty, probably never really in touch with reality.
nothing has changed, it's been this way forever. Look at any hundred of Christmas movies that have come out on the subject, nothing new here

Are you aware of the origin of the gift giving during Christmass? The Gift Giving day for the christians is actually the 6th.
The gift giving during christmass was actually banned by the catholic church during the middle age.

Take Christmass as a both, pagan and religious date.

I like the Christmas atmosphere
Also, this Christmas, my parent's want to get together with family friends which I barely know and speak to, and even worse; the majority of them are adults, and the rest are little kids.
This is putting me off, so I might as well go to church this year and party with friends.
Christmas is actually to commemorate the birth of Jesus.
This idea confuses the hell out of me. There is no reason whatsoever to believe that Jesus was born in December. The Christian bible doesn't even provide textual support for that claim. It actually mentioned sheep herders taking care of their sheep, and sleeping outside. Who does that in the middle of a cold winter night?

I get that people will celebrate it for that reason regardless, but it just confuses me. Especially since it has Pagan origins.
Next time a Jehovah's witness comes to your door they will give you an Awake titled "The truth about Christmas." It will change you thinking.
Man, when a Jehovah's witness comes by my house and if I answer it they pretty much REFUSE to leave until I take all they have.

OT: Christmas has always been commercialized to me.
Please, spare the drama for some other sucker that is unaware of our own generation's materialism. It is quite sad to see yet another rant on how each generation is becoming worse than the last, without having the critic, who gazes down on newer generations with a sense of superiority and wisdom that would make even the most arrogant fool blush, realize his own shortcomings. I suggest that, before you write another asinine rant on some subject you poorly understand and really are in no position to compare, you think twice before making a fool of yourself by expressing your amusingly misguided opinions.
I am fully aware of our (meaning America's) materialism which is why I wrote that, although I am glad to see that you have a firm grasp on the English language so it's hard to really retort with something witty. I don't see why your upset though. It's just a website and this is how I feel like expressing my opinions and for the most part people feel the same way as me. And I don't think I'm "superior" in any way what so ever. This has nothing to do with generations if you actually read the text. It's been like this as long as I can remember. But like I said, you never explained why you were upset so I'm more confused than anything.

But once again I must say, you have a firm grasp on English for which I can respect you for, me on the other hand, well... Not so much.

I like Christmas because I can be with close family and relatives and have a great night together The presents are just icing on the cake, really. Most of my friends actually just like spending time with their family, but it's not like we'll chat about how much we love them, we'd probably talk about what kind of presents we want and hope to get right?

Not really, I still see my family, I still do the "Christmas" thing, but people just aren't that happy.

You dont have to be Christian to celebrate Christmas. I had a Christian upbringing, and never once was I excited about anything related to Jesus. Jesus never played any role in Christmas for me.

I agree TS, I might be the only one who read you're whole post >.> Everyone is all "What are you getting?" I'm glad to spend quality time with my family and give a select few people a meaningful gift. I don't care what I get, I want to make others smile. Homemade/cute gifts.

I love Christmas, partially becuase of the gifts, but mostly because its Christmas. I love the cheeriness in the air, the commercials, the decorating, etc. Most of all, I love my seeing my family on Christmas Eve/day.

Honestly, I've never really paid special attention to Christmas. Haven't celebrated it since I was in the 6th grade, which was around 4 years ago.

I suppose I can agree, but...
