What kind of droid should I get?

I've never had a smart phone. Just turned 20 and since I'm kind of entering the real world now I figure it might be practical to get one.

Things I care about:
long battery life (wishful thinking with a smart phone I know)
good user interface (not too worried about that with droids)
durability - I plan on keeping it for a long time

I really don't care for most of the fancy gadgets and trinkets that come with it. I mostly just want internet access (mostly for maps, google, email, facebook, etc). And being able to see text conversations instead of individual texts on my flip phone will be nice =P

but anyway. suggestions please? I'm thinking of getting some sort of HTC but I really don't know anything about smart phones... I know there is a new model or something coming out over summer but idc about that >.>
If you're looking for a nice user interface, take a look at windows phones. Even the co-founder of Apple thought it was better than android and iOS

If you're looking to mod your phone (overclock/root/ROMs), go with android. They're really customisable and have great specs.

edit: One thing I love about android is that it's in sync with my GMAIL account. All my contacts, calender dates, apps etc are under my email account.
Android also has free emulators (GBA, GBC, SNES, N64!)
I don't care too much about modding my phone but I really do love droids cuz they're so practical and powerful. I'm definitely a good person. but I will consider windows phones too =) I'm not very tech savvy =P

The Lumia 900 is by far the most sexiest phone.. If only Nokia went with android.

Hmm, yes, I should definitely do my research, but these suggestions are a good place to start. I'm sure that no matter what phone I get, as long as it works, I'll be happy in the end. The glitchiness of some of these phones scares me though xD

I'm clumsy.. so I'm stuck using a flip phone.

OT: @xfeeshie: is right. Do you're research first TS, and don't hesitate to visit phone carriers to play around with their available phone models.

My advice is to do your research before finalizing your purchase. I would recommend you join some android forums like XDA or Phandroid which you can go into specific device forums to look for problems you might not want to face. If you are tech savy enough, you can root/custom ROM your device making battery life and performance amazing for almost any phone.

Also @charismatic, I would never go to a manufacture support unless there is a device defect as they are no help at all. Asking your questions on android forums can solve all your problems(XDA Developers is basically the central of all android developers so they can provide help)

Anything with a screen below 4.32" should be good for you then.
I'd suggest the Sony Ericsson Xperia Active, Samsung I8520, or the Samsung Galaxy Ace 2.

I don't really know much about HTC, so I can't really suggest anything from them.
