Im going to start gyming. Any advice?
Basil probably isn't the best place to ask about this, but here goes...
I joined a gym the other day and I plan on going there to work out and to build muscle mass. Could anyone give me some advice? sets/reps/techniques/workouts and anything else that could be potentially useful. Should I start on machines or free weights?

Step 1: Make s gym journal where you write down sets/reps/weights
Step 2: Read up on Starting Strength
Step 3: Get large
@swaznman, well I got my non-consecutive workout days from starting strength (which i kinda grew out off since now I do other things other than the exercise listed their) but I guess everyone's different, I find myself getting gains at a decent pace, but as long as it works. No need to rush.
Edit: Oh yea, TS, having good music actually boosts your motivations and intensity. But choose your music carefully:
if you were listening to something like this:

not gonna lie but you might drop that free weight on urself
also if ur 18+ u could try supplements like pre-workout (im using assualt, was on jack3d but they say DMAA is bad) it helps alot
For starters, if your diet is bad, you need to clean that up. If you have a bad diet and try to work out, you will actually lose mass because you are not giving your body the right foods/energy to build muscle.

Rest the other 2 days of the week. If you're a little on the heavy side then add at least 15 minutes of cardio after each workout and use day 6 as a full cardio day. The weight itself really depends on you.
Beginners don't need so much time to rest; OP would probably be better off with doing a full-body routine 3 days/wk.
I don't see why you would start going into splitting until at least a year with weights.

That gains muscle like none other. My Gym teacher had us do it yesterday.
well,
A) Drop your ego. For example, if u see someone benching lot more weight than you, don't try to attempt what he/she is doing, you will get hurt
B) Be intense, don't pick up super light weight and think your actually working out, put effort and concentration on what you are doing
C) Don't workout everyday; If you actually put effort into your workouts, your muscles will sore and you will need to rest, overworking muscles does more harm than good
D) Be consistent, don't go like Monday is chest day Wednesday is chest day Friday is chest day. No divide up your workouts into different muscle groups on different days.
E) Don't be an idiot and think "I only need to bicep curls" Work everything, your body muscles work together, so they should all get worked out
F) Get proper nutrients and protein, no point of working out without these otherwise ur wasting time since u would most likely make no gains
oh yea, if you are at total lost as to what to do, follow a body building program, I recommend starting strength.
for the most part, this guy is right.
some things i disagree with, is maybe in the first week or two you wont be able to workout everyday. But later you can seriously workout like 4 days in a row with a 1 day break afterward.
it all depends on what you workout. you shouldnt be able to workout the same muscle twice in two days, but you have many muscle groups, so you can trade off so many, by the time your done, you can restart your split again.
also focus from body in to out. by that i mean, dont be hitting isolation bicep or triceps or calves. focus your back shoulders chest for upperbody. do compound workouts, workouts that workout more than one muscle at a time. you will build better functional strength
also IMO freeweights are superior to machines, but....theres nothing too wrong with machines when you first start out. you want to gradually move onto all freeweights, as they are more functional and build more strength to balancing the weights and etc.
free weights all the way! Man I wish my friend would workout with me more often...
OT: best advice ever: experiment with different exercises for different parts of your body. Whatever works out for you for like the first 3 months and if u see that ur gaining muscles (ectomorphs usually see results within 3 months) keep it up. But make sure to change your routine once every month or so or if u hit a plataeu. Also...u must I mean MUST remember that workout is only 20% of the process of gaining muscle..ONLY 20%!..the rest of 80% of gaining muscle is in the DIET..Make sure to take alot of PROTEIN!..supplements like weight gainer or just protein like Whey protein will help alot. But make sure that u EAT, EAT, and EAT if u wanna see results...
I'm in the process of building muscle myself, and im seeing alot of positve results..I am getting bigger fo sho
If you want to gain muscle, do the workouts everybody is telling you to do, but do them in super sets (ex. push ups for 30 seconds, plank, repeat for how many times); remember to change your workout every no and again, not to often, but your muscles will plateau after awhile, so an alteration will help.
I plan on working all my muscles each session. But I don't know exactly what exercises I should be doing. Can anyone offer me a few suggestions?

Well I spent 285 for a one year membership. Most gyms are like 600-900 where I live.
