Hacked. Looking for explanation?

As per any normal weekday, I log into MS after I come home from a long day of working and commuting only to find that i'm entering an invalid password. I quickly enter in all possible, previous passwords but to no avail. I decide to log into a secondary account, only to find my main sitting in an fm selling my tradeable equips for 1/4 to 1/10 of the actual price of the item. At this point, I try resetting the PW on the account. Simple enough? Not quite, as I did not know the PW on my email that was supposed to be attached to this account. This is not an error on my part, as I knew specifically what the PW should have been. So I proceed to reset the PW on my email. After finally gaining access to the email, I tried resetting my PW on my MS account again, and I never received the email, meaning that the hacker changed the email attached to my MS account as well.

Long story short, I got hacked, both my account, and my email (he used it to change the email attached to the account). Luckily, this email was one of my old emails from when I first made this MS account (6+ years old), so there was no valuable information attached in these emails.

My real frustration comes from my lack of understanding of why this happened. Before you start with "you downloaded a virus" or "lulz 2 much pron", please understand how I use the computer I play MS on. I don't download anything on the computer I use to play MS. I'm dead serious, it's an OK desktop that I only use to play MS. Otherwise, I'm on my MacBook Pro, so I have no need to do anything other than MS on my desktop. That essentially means that I have not downloaded ANYTHING in say the last 2 months on this computer (this was when I came back to MS after a year long break/quitting).

Can someone explain to me how the hacker discovered my account information, then changed it, along with the email that is attached to the account (therefore, he knew my email information aswell)?

Apologies for my wall of text, but I'm deeply frustrated that this event occurred.

You probably had a really simple password as Nexon does not know your email information.

I'm going to take a guess and say it might be e-mail related. I created a new e-mail a while back and recently got an e-mail saying someone had compromised my e-mail, meaning they got my address AND password AND went into my account somehow, but they got locked out (thanks gmail.) My old e-mail was compromised and I don't even know how it happened when I kept it to myself for bank and school purposes only.

Hmm, how strange. Have you received any files via Skype recently?

Really sorry for your loss! But the more pressing concern, as much as your hacking is sad, is the fact that your email got hacked. If people could hack emails like this, even emails with more information, that's a serious issue.

No, not luckily it was one of your old emails.
That is the reason you got hacked. You got hacked through email since it was probably compromised by many different ways.
The older that email was the more mistakes you probably have done to expose your information.
Ex: Old MTS email leak.

Remember kids. Change your account email, emails password, Nexon account password, Nexon account pin, Nexon account security questions. OFTEN.
And watch out for keyloggers.

@pimpledude: As you mentioned you've created this account 6+ years ago, I question whether you were one of the unfortunate people who were exposed with the MTS exploit that occurred a few years back(and eventually causing it to be shut down).

Your account ID may have leaked through here. Once an account has been accessed, I believe you were able to obtain your email through a dummy NX charge process through "pay by cash" (not sure if you can still do this).

[and all of this information may have been left in the hacker's spreadsheet of hacked accounts left dormant until now?]
My question is not regarding whether you use your Desktop computer for other things. I am wondering if you accessed your e-mail liked to your MapleStory account outside of your Desktop computer, such as on your Mac.
No to both. The email address is old and I have stopped using this email since like 2 or 3 years ago.

How old is that email you used for MS? Is it possible the email was deleted and a hacker remade the email to gain access to your account?
I feel like this is very improbable but it's the only thing I can think of at the moment. =/

Do other people know your wifi password. They could "keylog" the wifi info that's regularly leaking out

I appreciate the help! I myself am confused as to how the hacker gained access to my email information in particular. Are there keyloggers/viruses/hacks out there that can gain access to both my account and email?
You most certainly can. As after my initial suspicion that my email was changed, I attempted to change the email on my secondary account and it worked just fine.
EDIT: Ah sorry I was only reading half of what you typed. Ignore this.

The confusing part is how did your email get hacked?

There are other ways for you to get hacked. I got hacked and I pretty much didn't download nothing that had a virus.
I guess when you get hacked, it just happens. There can't be an explanation... I'm sorry for what happened to you though
Best thing you can do is send a ticket to nexon. You'll get compensated eventually, but it's worth sending a ticket.

It's happen to me too. I feel that it is either you opening an email with a virus attached when you opened the email itself or the hacker got ur info from neocon itself. I recently came back after I got hacked.
