It uses mesos from your inventory to block 50% of the damage that is inflicted. In comparison to the amount of money you will be wasting on HP pots if you didn't use MG, MG uses less. It also works against 1/1 at bosses.
It's cheap. It saves lives. What more can you ask for?
In the future RED update it uses up less mesos IIRC, either way you save mesos.
It takes meso from your inventory but the amount it takes is less than the amount you'd spend on potions anyway so you end up saving money regardless.
