@Aristocratan: Killing the power like that can damage the "boot up" files on the disk so it can't load Windows, but if the only damage is to the software (not the hard drive itself), you can usually fix it by using the Windows Repair disk to reinstall those boot files, or the Windows Install disk to reformat the hard drive and re-install Windows from scratch. If there's no physical damage to the hard drive, that should fix the problem and leave the laptop working again.

Normally you just insert either of those discs and follow the prompts for it to work.
If neither of those two procedures work, that indicates there's probably damage to the hard drive.

@BobR: what if he unplugged it with no battery in. then how would you fix it with the problem I have with the windows disc

@Aristocratan There shouldn't be any effect on the hard drive. As long as the computer has power from somewhere (wall outlet, or battery), it should work normally.

If the power cord gets yanked out of the computer or the wall socket while the computer is turned on while there's no battery, THAT could damage the hard drive by scrambling the Windows files so the computer might not boot up, but normally that could be fixed by reinstalling Windows.

From what you said about the computer being dropped, it sounds more like physical damage, which usually can only be fixed by replacing the drive.

@BobR: I was wondering. It is a laptop without the battery. I was wondering if the missing battery may affect the disks not working

@Aristocratan That message means the computer is trying to read from the hard drive but it's not getting any response when it tries to load Windows.
If you have another laptop available you could try the suspect hard drive in it to see if you get the same results there, but I suspect the damage from the fall may have sealed its fate.

@BobR: Thanks for helping! I checked the BIOS and it did show the hard drive. I took the hd out and put it back in. but the same still happens. when I put the windoes installation disk in, it brings me to windows starting screen where the 4 orbs form to windows sign. at that, it keeps me there a long time, and then brings me to the "cursor" screen.
Also the message says error loading operating system.
Again, thanks for helping! Me and my friend appreciates it

What message does it show..? What does it say..?

From your description of the problem and the symptoms, it sounds like the hard drive was damaged when the laptop fell.
Your installation disc should be able to format and reinstall Windows IF the hard drive was OK. Apparently when it tries to access the hard drive it's unable to get any response which results in the blinking "underscore" cursor.

If you can access the "BIOS Settings" (usually you hit F2, F1 or DEL over and over right after you press the power button to turn the computer on and it should go to a new settings page... if the first key doesn't work try the others one after the other, or look up how to enter the BIOS settings for that specific computer model on Google), check to see if the BIOS can see the hard drive.

If the BIOS can't see the hard drive, the drive is dead and needs to be replaced.

One other thing to try, if the laptop has an access door on the bottom that lets you get to the hard drive, open the door and remove the hard drive, then plug it back in securely into its socket, then try checking it in the BIOS again (or try reinstalling Windows again). It's a long shot, but the drive might have gotten dislodged from its connector when the laptop was dropped and plugging it back in tightly might fix it. Don't count on it tho.
