Hayato

I feel like I have no idea how to control my Hayato

So over the last two days I've been finally getting around to getting my last couple of Link Mules to 120, now I'm working on getting my Hayato to 100 for the S level Card.

That being said, I feel like I'm just pushing random buttons and hoping for results, which I do tend to get. Still, I'd like to have some semblance of an idea of wth I'm doing lol.

For one, isn't Shouryuusen+Whirlwind Cut supposed to be a decent combo? Whenever I chain them, Whirlwind does the attack animation, but doesn't seem to actually do any hits, let alone damage.

Furthermore, I'm having trouble with properly timing Sanrenzan+Whirlwind. I can sometimes pull it off, but nowhere near consistently. How many times am I supposed to spam Sanrenzan before going into Whirlwind?

Last thing-I have to admit, one of my biggest issues with this class is the skill names. I don't speak Japanese, I certainly don't type Japanese and I definitely have zero interest in doing either one. It honestly really turns me off to the class.

Do people usually read the skill name before using the skill o.o
For me, hayato was all about the graphics (slashing here, slashing there, slashing everywhere)
And the combos are really buggy. After using the spinny ball move, the combo is supposed to be either the horizontal line slash or arc slash, but rarely they actually connect.
Regular small monsters will never get hit by the second move unless they are on a higher platform. Even for the big, fat bosses like gigatoad and zak, the guaranteed critical hits usually don't appear. It's a matter of both distance to target and timing, so just trial and error it.

Shoryuusen combo's are bugged. As for the issue with the class having a Japanese theme - you don't need to be an enthusiast of the Japanese culture to enjoy Hayato.
I don't speak Japanese or write it - as you mentioned for yourself - and I can still pronounce the skill names with ease as well as spell them without much difficulty at all. (As if it was a challenge at all) Knowing what the skills mean translated was never a concern for me at all. Just another name - like Genesis, eight legs easton, sharp eyes, you name it.

Trust me on this one, man... you're making things overly complicated. The combos are nice if you can do them, but coming from someone who's played into his 130s on a Hayato from the beginning, you really don't need them all that much. Honestly, you can do surprisingly well by just spamming Sanrenzan and using other skills for mobility. If you want some combos, just remember to hit the new attack as the other one is ending and it should pull off (so long as it isn't glitched).

Okay, so let's go over the list. I should note beforehand that Hayato and Kanna are still riddled with bugs and neither JMS nor GMS have done anything to balance them in light of recent changes to the game; it's been less than a month since they finally got their hyper skills. Hayato's defensive mechanics are cool at a glance, but do little more than cause you to shoot yourself in the foot 65% of the time (when Jinsoku is maxed). But you're not aiming for high levels on your Hayato now, so I'll leave that be for the moment.

1) Which combos are you having trouble pulling off? Trial and error should be sufficient for you to figure out which combos work with the least delay, much in the way that I did on my Thunder Breaker.
2) Shouryuusen and its combos are bugged at the moment. The hit detection and autocrit are both non-functional. I've debound Shouryuusen for now; you don't really have to worry about the autocrit on either once you max Hitokiri Strike later on anyway.
3) What result are you trying to achieve with Sanrenzan + Whirlwind? Spamming Whirlwind? (an understandable goal)
If so, then just hitting the first cast of Sanrenzan should do the trick--it'll reset the delay timers on all of your linkable skills.

4) Your "biggest issues" are remarkably trivial. OH NO THIS ISN'T ENGLISH. WOW, I FEEL CHEATED OUT OF MY FUN. As you claim to have no knowledge of Japanese, I can understand why you feel detached from the character's thorough Japanese-ness, but there's no way you're completely unable to detect the aesthetic at least. I'm a Japanese enthusiast (by career), but appreciating the aesthetic doesn't require you to be like me in that regard.
Most of the longer terms in Hayato's skill set are not normal Japanese words. Sanrenzan, for instance, sounds somewhat arcane and flowery in Japanese as it should to the English ear. It literally means "Three chained slashes," but aside from being a fluffy name for a technique in Japanese, it's pretty mundane-sounding in English. The same applies for several other skill names: Hitokiri Strike (in which Nexon decided to take an already popular term for "murderer" ) was originally called Issen, which means "flash." Also sounds pretty dull when you translate it.
The point is that your experience wouldn't just be a detached feeling if they used English translations of the names--it would be that much more boring to you. Inventing their own names, however, has its own set of problems (in part because the original creators would have a hissy fit).
Furthermore, on occasion the names of skills wouldn't make sense. The "rai" in the name of the final form of Sanrenzan means "lightning," but that attack isn't elemental, so it'd be confusing to players. Translating that doesn't do anyone any favors.
The name "hayato" itself was never translated in part because there is more than one way to do so. The name can be a reading of the "jin" kanji used in Jinsoku (or the third stage of Sanrenzan), meaning "swift." Alternatively it could be a minor twist of a phrase meaning "fast sword." Obviously naming him the generic "samurai" or "Japanese soldier" was out of the question for Nexon.
