you just buy it then install it into your motherboard, depending on how much RAM your motherboard can be upgraded to.
If its an old computer it'll probably be 8GB or less.
you need buy Ram because its hardware that's needs to be physically installed on your motherboard
and you need to buy the correct one for your motherboard model.
^also don't just purchase any old RAM. You have to buy the ones that are compatible to your motherboard.
I remember facepalming when a roommate's friend came to me to help fit in a DESKTOP RAM into a laptop (lol).
