@CouponGoddess: Well, Zero is different. Quests and what have you. No grindy grind stuff. Mainly story oriented.
Also Monster life, Hyper skills, secondary weps for all classes, etc.

Explorers got revamped,
KoCs/CKs (Cygnus Knights/Knights of Cygnus) got revamped,
Explorers have a story now,
Zero class is out,
etc, etc, etc. Those were some GMS exclusives. And Tot's guide is actually really useful. You can get free level-ups if you know what you're doing. (Also, rewards. .3.)

doesn't really matter how funded you are, If you quitted a year ago, your weapon is most likely outdated..

I actually wasn't here when root abyss was released. I'm not sure what's new to you besides the unleashed and red content.
Post Unleashed: Dojo's much harder, bosses were revamped to be insanely difficult.
Dawnveil update: Gollux came out, a new boss 150+ content. It's not really interesting, but there are some interesting items you can get from it.
Red update: Commerci a new area that comes right after gollux. It's slightly story based, (not that interesting really) with a new type of solo "pq." You can get the new items "sweet-h2o" equips.
The only thing that's been actually interesting IMO was the zero storyline, but since you dont want the whole "new character" side of it, not really much. The game's still a grind to level styled game.
I did mention mini-games. They're kind of fun board games (like omok) but they're publicly set up. It's again, relatively luck based as well.

I have rl life friends who get tired of playing GTAO so I figured why not try Maple again when we don't feel like hanging out and just playing video games

I just came back from before Kaiser and stuff came out, and I kinda like the new changes. They're hard to figure out, but the new quests and things of that sort brighten the game up for me a little bit.

There are a lot of events going on right now.
For damage interests, you can farm red coins to make really nice weapons with the red scrolls (+8 attk scrolls).
The mini-games currently available are okay. They're more a less a free way to gamble with your luck.
New content wise, gollux and commerci are decent "bosses" that don't require THAT much funding to do. Of course this only refers to the easy modes of each.
