Why is 4ch banned? In that case we should also ban Google, Reddit, etc...
Because it is. If you want the others blocked, you need to tell Mr. Basil to add them to the filter too.
@acuppa: When it's obvious what the words are, it still counts as bypassing the filter.

Also- did you report that post..?
Mr. Basil doesn't go through threads looking for rule violations, that's what the report function is for.
If no one reports a post, and if the moderators don't see it then of course it's going to slip past- until it's reported.
I took care of it - under protest because I think it's a silly policy with too many loopholes. MrBasil himself didn't even appear to recognise it as a violation, so perhaps some revisions are in order. It just came to mind that technically posting frames from my favourite comics such as Lucky Luke, Suske en Wiske and Gaston is against the rules because they censor words in a similar (albeit more comical) manner. That's kinda weird.
@mitarumetaro I thought the same thing, but those posts seem to stick around even if you flag them. Also, mrbasil replied to this post without any repercussions: http://www.basilmarket.com/forum/2812678/2/#45624504
Oh sorry, I forgot to mention that all decisions regarding suspensions come down to a combination of (1) the mood the mod is in, and (2) how much the mod likes or dislikes you
What's the current attitude toward masking words entirely with asterisks (e.g. ****)?
It's "bypassing the filter" and you get suspended

You will then argue "BUT IT WAS JUST ASTERISKS.... THAT'S NOT AT ALL INAPPROPRIATE" and they will reply "we all knew what you were trying to say", even though it is impossible to derive any meaning from the asterisks.

One thing everyone is missing is that anyone is free to send in a ticket to Mr. Basil asking him to allow whatever their favorite word is, and if he agrees that he wants people to be using that word on his site he can take it out of the filter.

The filter, and the rule about being suspended for bypassing the filter is there because it's his site, and he makes the rules.

@mitarumetaro: Something happened in this thread earlier when a person was suspended for bypassing the swear filter while asking why he could say one word, but not another word with the same meaning. I don't know who did it, but I'd have let it go, personally... It's similar to your example, in which you used an apparently unfiltered word in a neutral context and IMO you shouldn't have been suspended for that. I'm very much in favour of making exceptions when it comes to threads like this one.

There we have it, folks, the problem with the filter. Many people assume that a word is okay to use regardless of context if it's unfiltered, while that's not always the case. Your use the word was okay. The other guy didn't use it appropriately. I don't know if everyone's aware of context or wants to be aware of it. Blehh, it's a darn dilemma and no solution is without its cons... >< I won't say the rules of this site are crystal clear (cause they aren't), but some basic things seem to be beyond many Basilers' grasps. No talking about hacking, no racism, no sex talk, no hating. If people'd stick to those rules, we'd probably only have to use the filter to block malicious URLs.

(I sometimes wonder how much would change in practice if we erased a bunch of words from the filter. Maybe it wouldn't make that much of a difference for the staff since people violate the filter all the time, while users would probably appreciate the relative freedom it'd give them)
That particular word has more meanings than the clinical term you mentioned. By filtering it, we would also disable a number of words that are harmless.

As for the comment that just disappeared: that's how you can't use that word on Basil. Context is key.
I was literally suspended for saying "I can't believe you can use the word cock on basil". (Or perhaps it was "I can't believe the word cock is uncensored", or some other similar variation).

What you said might make sense if context wasn't always key, for most words that are filtered.

I can't say "a girl with a pen(octopus)s" on basil, (well.... I have using similar bypasses) when referring to trans* things. However, as you just witnessed, as soon as someone says "cock", they provoke exactly those sorts of posts which you are trying to prevent in the first place.
The e-acute has been censored because people used that specific letter to bypass swearwords.
Yeah, it's a little.... hm.

The reason why most words have been blocked have nothing to do with the words themselves being taboo. The words have been blocked because of that which they represent. Certain parts of the human anatomy are examples. The idea is that people will understand the message and think "Okay, I can't say *insert word*, so that probably means we can't talk about sex here." Unfortunately there's a certain Forbidden Fruit effect which causes some people to talk about them anyway. Either that, or people can't take hints. Same for the names of hacking sites and hacking tools.
Other words, like racist terms, have been censored so they theoretically can't be used to insult people. The message is basically the same; "You can't say *insert word* so I guess racism isn't allowed here." Of course people don't care for that and use the words anyway, or they're absolutely clueless about why they've been censored.
Similarly, we use it to block out malicious links, making it harder for phishers and scammers to spread them via Basil Market.

Ergo, the presence of the filter is, if anything, symbolic. But there's also another purpose, which has nothing to do with false reasons such as "We don't want young kids to learn bad words from Basil". I think I'm not only speaking for myself when I say I'd rather not see Basil turned into a swearfest. I know what'd happen if we disabled the censor. People'd start swearing like construction workers. They'd use those swears for insults as well, resulting in higher suspensions for rule #1 and more sex talk, resulting in more rule #3 suspensions. Even the semi-intellectual Sleepywood was full of disgusting language.

This coming from a person who lives in a country that has no "Seven words you can't say on television" and who knows more swearwords than about everyone.
For the longest time, I didn't know why the word document was blocked. Thank you maplestory censor for enlightening me.

Censor system is pretty useless and counterproductive in the first place...
It may block you from using it (when most of the time it's just gonna mess up your wall of text you wrote...) but when someone unknowingly writes a blocked word and has no idea what it means they'll most likely look it up and LEARN a new, bad word. It just adds to the corruption.

I've learned some nasty crap from just MS curse filter alone.... really didn't need that sort of vocabulary.

I seriously don't understand the need to implement a censor system, if kids have access to this website, they have access to youtube and facebook which does not censor comments.

Absolutely useless to be honest.

I just hate how you can't use the legit names of certain body parts, you can't use the word for an adult who is attracted to children, and stuff like that
