Not really proven or something, but from my experience,
scrolling it slowly works better. Like, I tried pressing so fast to scroll, and I failed most 70%'s then next I tried slowly, carefully then passed all 9 slots with 70%'s.
I got 4 15% to work in a row
used 15% spell trace 6 times, passed 3 of them, pretty happy about the result.
95% failed for me 2 times in a row.
With those numbers, I wouldn't be surprised if a 100% trace failed.

Not only do you save spell traces, but let's say you failed 5 in a row and continued.
Result comes in : pass pass pass fail pass. Now, you're in a position you've used all your slots you're +4 and now you have to clean slate 6 slots to try to complete it.
Slating is the most expensive part to scrolling with traces.
Now, if you stopped and inno'd or bought a whole new weapon all together, you could have been in the position that you're +4 with 5 slots left which means you have a chance to get 0-5 extra working. It's cheaper long run and every extra scroll you pass it's one less slot you have to worry about slating.

This is a pretty accurate way. You want to innocence your item and restart in order to avoid completely wasting spell traces.
